@RoseAylingEllis being on @bbcstrictly is so important for raising Deaf Awareness, but more importantly for #BSL . So many parents focus on speech (understandably) when they find out their baby is deaf 1/
They suddenly think, how will my deaf child communicate with the world? The world is hearing, not deaf. If they use #BSL they will never fit in the “real world” and it will “close” opportunities to them, they only remain in the “Deaf world”. 2/
But the truth is, using #BSL from the beginning (as @RoseAylingEllis family did) only increases opportunities & opens up doors for her, makes it possible to live in both worlds. I can’t imagine being on @bbcstrictly trying to follow what is going on WITHOUT a #BSL interpreter 3/
A deaf resident at our supported accommodation in Edinburgh was given a DNR without his knowledge or consent all because of 'communication difficulties'!

'Do Not Resuscitate' order for being deaf. Are deaf people not worth saving because of 'communication difficulties'?

It is concerning that a deaf person was deemed unworthy of saving in 2021. Our support manager at Slateford Green said:
"Everybody has a right to make a decision about their health, and that includes deaf people"

I am not fluent in #britishsignlanguage but I took my first (level 1) exam as a teen in 2002 when I began to first experience hearing loss, did more in 2006, then 2016, & most recently this lockdown. So have been steadily building my use of #bsl most of my adult life!

There are lots of reasons to learn #signlanguage even if you don't know anyone with #hearingloss. Sign with babies, with SEN folk, for your CV, to make your business more accessible & because it is genuinely fun! If you might be interested @ me and RTs are appreciated ❤️

So I just sat in a BRT bus partly filled with Pupils from #Ikejajuniorhighschool Yesterday .
They all stood (standing) there were two woman acting up cos they were around them. Dyu know why? They were Deaf some of them Both D & D and they were all trying to make.....

Conversation the only best way they knew how to!- Gesticulation, facial expressions and sign language. Most of them smiling and exclamating as they communicated!
I was surprised at first when they boarded cos they were too silent for Secondary school pupils. #Solohtolz
