THREAD: Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the US gov is legally responsible for the #MentalHealth trauma that Trump’s #FamilySeparation policy inflicted on thousands of migrant families at the US/Mexico border. nytimes.com/2019/11/06/us/… (1/9)
This groundbreaking ruling recognizes that the Trump Admin knowingly put families in danger & is obligated to provide a solution. #MentalHealth svcs are a step on the path to healing for kids & parents who were torn apart simply for seeking safety. #FamiliesBelongTogether (2/9)
It’s also critical that we don’t forget the millions of children--the vast majority of whom are US citizens--who are increasingly vulnerable to or have already been separated from their parents due to ICE enforcement in our own communities. #FamiliesBelongTogether #NoRaids (3/9)
We know that immigration enforcement poses a direct threat to the health & wellbeing of children in immigrant families. Yet the Trump Admin continues to use #ICE as a tool to terrorize families & has rolled back the few existing protections to mitigate harm to children. (4/9)
In @CLASP_DC research w/ #ECE providers & immigrant parents, we learned that even 3 y/os are afraid that they could come home from #preschool or #childcare to find their parents have been taken away. clasp.org/ourchildrensfe… (4/9)
@CLASP_DC The fear of being separated from a parent alone is enough to harm children’s wellbeing. Children who actually have a parent detained or deported—or worse, who witness a parent’s arrest—are at even greater risk of developing #MentalHealth problems. (5/9)
@CLASP_DC All across the country, parents are preparing for the possibility of deportation & doing everything they can to keep their children safe. @disolis shares one family’s story in @palabranahj: palabranahj.org/archive/volume… #FamiliesBelongTogether (6/9)
@CLASP_DC @disolis @palabranahj The Trump Admin’s “deliberate indifference” isn’t limited to families at the border. With every worksite raid, traffic stop, and home raid; with the termination of #DACA and #TPS; with its #PublicCharge rule, the US gov is knowingly putting millions of children in danger. (7/9)
@CLASP_DC @disolis @palabranahj These children also need #MentalHealth supports, but multilingual, low-cost providers are few & far btwn in most communities. In MS, where ~1500 children were separated from loved ones after 8/7 worksite raid, there is just 1 bilingual trauma counselor in the entire state. (8/9)
@CLASP_DC @disolis @palabranahj We have a responsibility to help children & families heal from these state-sanctioned traumas. Instead of pouring resources into ICE & CBP, we should #DefundHate and invest public dollars into the programs & services that help families and communities thrive. (END)
