AI and public engagement: Before @nesta_uk and @involveUK run our public dialogue on the ethics of using AI in health on the 12th of June, I wanted to highlight some of the great things other organisations are doing @AdaLovelaceInst @theRSAorg @turinginst @wellcometrust (thread)
1. The @theRSAorg will be carrying out a citizens' jury on automated decision making, and has just published the results of a survey into this. thersa.org/discover/publi…
2. The @royalsociety did a great piece of work last year on public attitudes to machine learning. Here are some benefits the public see from the use of machine learning: thersa.org/discover/publi…
3. The @AdaLovelaceInst is gearing up to be an important voice in this area. See this recent letter to the FT adalovelaceinstitute.org/letter-to-the-…
4. The Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence held an engaging session on 'What do the public need to know about AI.' data.parliament.uk/writtenevidenc…
5. This report on the ethical, social and political challenges of using AI in health, by @wellcometrust and @FutureAdvocacy highlights the key issues at stake and is a good example of how to engage the public directly in your research wellcome.ac.uk/sites/default/… [PDF]
6. Here @nesta_UK my colleague John Loder published this great report on how we can create a people-powered future for AI in health nesta.org.uk/report/confron…
7. We are also funding two experiments on engaging the public in discussions about the application of AI in driverless cars (using creative methods like storytelling and games) nesta.org.uk/blog/announcin…
8. And here's why we think that public engagement is needed: 1. it will improve AI research 2. it will direct research at the most pressing problems (perhaps helping @UKRI_News come up with more effective missions) 3. It's the right thing to do nesta.org.uk/blog/how-to-in…
9. What have I missed? Who else is engaging the public directly in discussions about the ethical, social and political challenges of AI research and application?
