It's Super Tuesday, & my cheat sheet has ballooned to include 33 important elections: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

So here's a quick thread highlighting some (lower-profile) races you should absolutely be paying attention to today!
You know the big ones:
—Will Dems be shut-out in any of the 3 crowded Orange Co districts (#CA39, #CA48, #CA49)?
—Will the GOP be shut out in one/both of California's Senate & Gov race?
What else?
In New Mexico, state Rep. Debbie Rodella is facing a primary challenger in the Democratic primary (Susan Herrera). Rodella has killed progressive legislation, such as automatic voting registration. See: dailykos.com/stories/2018/4…
Iowa Dems & Montana Republicans decide who will face GOP Governor Reynolds & Democratic Senator Tester, respectively. Alabama's governor is trying to make it through her primary, & South Dakota's governorship is wide open.
California is hosting a mountain of District Attorney & Sheriff races featuring candidates running as criminal justice reformers, some in the mold of Philly's Krasner.

Highest-profile reformist challenges may be against San Diego's GOP DA Summer Stephan & Sacramento DA Anne Marie Schubert (recently in national news over her handling of the Stephon Clark shooting). Eyes are also in Contra Costa, Riverside, Yolo, Orange County, & Santa Clara.
In two districts that Democrats are either favored (#NM01) or highly competitive (#IA03) in, there are very competitive primaries with interesting ideological contrasts. Check out previews:

Democratic challengers will also emerge in GOP-held seats such as Gianforte's #MTAL, the open #NJ11, and top targets districts #CA10, #CA25, #CA45, #CA50, and #IA01.
In California, Democratic state Senator Newman is facing a recall election. A GOP win would end Democrats' supermajority.

It's the inverse in Missouri: Dems are trying to pick-up a red-leaning state Senate district in a special election.
And there are many other races (San Francisco Mayor, San Diego Clerk)—so tons of other interesting stories are bound to pop up once results start rolling in! /end
Late addition: the Bay Area is voting today on a plan to provide $4.5 billion of transportation funds.

A basic obstacle to using elections to hold prosecutors accountable & to overhaul their practices is that elections rarely feature multiple candidates.

As you can see on this map, nearly all Wisconsin counties have had **at most** 1 contested election for prosecutor out of the past 3 election cycles. (And this includes primaries as well as general elections.) appealpolitics.org/2018/will-anyo…
And this isn’t a pattern that primarily concerns small counties: in Wisconsin’s 10 most populous counties over the past three cycles (so a total of 30 elections), there were just four instances where the winner faced even a single opponent.

Media should revise how it reports results. Saying "100% in" in CA & AZ because 100% of precincts report that small fraction of votes they plan to report on election night, when it's is known & reported that millions remain, is misleading & it enables some ppl to further mislead.
For instance: CA counties are transparent about just what ballots remain. So while the count is slow, you could integrate figures in presentation of results. The NYT says "100% reporting," when as shown here you can quickly log into Orange County's website & see ballots left:
Also, we've literally been going through this multiple times a year every other year for a while now, so I'm not sure why the "100%" is still a thing at this point.

North Carolina: GOP's rumored hope to pack state Supreme Court was thwarted as civil rights attorney Anita Earls ousted Justice Jackson & expanded Dems' majority from 4-3 to 5-2. (Court can only have 2 more seats.) Matters for voting rights litigation. #overlookedelectionstakes
New Hampshire: Safiya Wazir, a one-time refugee, ousted state Rep. Dick Patten in a Dem primary. But Patten attacked Wazir for being an immigrant & a mother, & he endorsed Wazir's GOP opponent. Yesterday, Wazir won. She's heading to the state House. #overlookedelectionstakes

A thread on @WholeFoods and elections: @Redistrict recently wrote that Dems will perform the best in areas that are geographically close to Whole Foods (WF). I decided to map/calculate the # of Whole Foods by congressional district to test his theory on WF and elections (1/9)
So first, the basics. There are 470 WF across the U.S., and 233/435 CD's have at least 1 WF in them. WF districts did tend to prefer Clinton over Trump, as they had an average 2016 pres. margin of +13 Clinton, while non-WF districts preferred Donald Trump by +8 points. (2/9)
@RepTedLieu’s #CA33, has the highest number of WF (dare I say it’s a Whole Foods gerrymander?!), with 10 WF. The Boston metro also has a large number of WF, with #MA05, and #MA07 (@AyannaPressley's new district) each having 7 (3/9)

2. Here's the vote broken down by party & gender. First, let's take a look at women. Andrew Gillum leads Ron DeSantis among independent female voters, 45% to 29%. Also, the percentage of Republican female crossover is about 6% > female Democrat crossover. Now, let's look at men.
3. Male voters in Florida are doing something funny, but in truth rather unsurprising, given the candidates. Independent male voters split at 44%, but Democrat male crossover is about 10% > than GOP male crossover. Still, the margin among women offsets it. More coming soon...
