When I moved to Santa Clarita, I had no idea that it had a council member named Bob Kellar who once stood at a militia rally and declared himself to be a "proud racist."

It almost seems unbelievable, but it's true.

Even more unbelievable — he's STILL on the council.
1/
It happened in 2010, on the corner outside the local sheriff's department.

There was an uproar when the video spread, but Kellar was defiant. He even refused to apologize.

eastbaytimes.com/2010/01/26/san…

2/
That speech was 10 years ago. Kellar has won re-election every time and continues to be a political powerbroker.

He was a force behind #CA25’s new congressman @MikeGarcia2020 — making a video noting Garcia is “all American” and “supports our president.”

Hear a dogwhistle?

So yeah it really hurt to have my old seat flip back to Republican-for a ton of people & also for me. In fact, it was pretty fucking devastating. I went offline & cried for a few days but, as always, getting ready to stand back up & keep fighting. Hope you are too.

Onward.❤️
Let’s be clear. My ex gave nonconsenual nude pics of me to the ppl who wanted this seat- people who were backing Garcia when he was my opponent. They gave those pics to the press. I resigned.

I take full responsibility for my mistakes, but this Republican win is no coincidence.
To @christyforca25, @housedemocrats, #CA25, my former staff & everyone who worked so hard to flip this seat, I’m so sorry. I know I let you down, and I reflect on my role in it all everyday. Know that I’m here, ready to work. Let’s take this seat back in Nov - #CA25 deserves it

Friday's dump of 25,980 more #CA25 ballots from L.A. County is the first update to net votes for Christy Smith, splittng 51.5%/48.5% for Smith and bringing Mike Garcia's margin down by 790 votes to 16,860.
Another 350 #CA25 votes were also added from Ventura County, splitting 50.9%/49.1% for Smith, cutting Garcia's margin down another six votes to 16,854.
Wild. Turnout in the #CA25 special election runoff is now at 40.78% with 173,322 votes in, surpassing the total from the #CA25 primary (which coincided with a competitive Democratic presidential primary).

Biggest lesson from the resounding Garcia victory in #CA25: Candidates matter. That lesson is doubly so in special election, when the race is the only game in town.

Son of Mexican immigrants & military vet running in heavily-Hispanic middle class district. That bio sells.
BUT...

Rs can't effectively say this translates to other races because they haven't recruited many Garcia-like candidates to run -- even in Trump districts.

Wes Hunt, Michelle Steele, Kean... not a whole lot of A-list recruits beyond that.
And adding insult to injury, CALIFORNIA-based Min Ldr Kevin McCarthy endorsed *against* Garcia in the primary.

So if he was such a great recruit, why couldn't the House GOP's own party leader see it?

No doubt that if Trump is ahead by just ≈1% in Arizona in on Election Night in Nov., & so it's clear to everyone who knows how the the hundreds of thousands of ballots oflater-ballots break that he's likely to lose the state (and the election?), that he will just claim victory.
And also no doubt — seeing coverage of 2018 midterms, of primaries in March, of #CA25 yesterday — that some media's (& some election offices') conventions around election reporting have absolutely not adapted to this moment, despite years of warning, & are borderline misleading.
And of course I messed up the grammar on the first tweet of thread. Should read: "it's clear to everyone who knows how AZ's later-ballots tend to break that he's likely to lose". And we're talking hundreds of thousands of ballots.

The latest attempt by California Democrats to rig the system has backfired miserably — it’s clear the tide has turned! @MikeGarcia2020’s victory is a shot in the arm for the GOP and a preview of the impending @realdonaldtrump election wave. #CA25
#CA25 voters delivered a resounding rebuke of Nancy Pelosi’s uninspiring playbook of more taxes, more spending, more government, and less freedom.
#CA25 confirms that voters firmly believe Republicans, not the do-nothing Democrats, are best equipped to return our nation to prosperity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of course we're going to talk about #CA25 today on #InsideTheNumbers. But you'll have to watch to hear my thoughts outside of this one bit...

Garcia's 56% to 44% lead is bigger than we projected w/ 70% reporting, which you'd know if you watched yesterday.

Friendly reminder that the percent of precincts reporting results is almost totally meaningless for elections like #CA25! The folks smarter than me seem to think that the early votes so far are good for Garcia ... but this also ain't over
If you're curious why: In California, absentee ballots POSTMARKED by Election Day will still count, so we just don't know how many are outstanding right now. These early numbers are certainly good for Garcia, though!
Here's the clearest sign (to me) that Garcia is gonna be the next representative-elect from #CA25: Seems like the Los Angeles Dems aren't expecting a late surge of votes! LACDP statement is not something you say if you think there's any chance remaining (highlighting mine)

AMAZING news for #CA39 @YoungKimCA winning over Democrat incumbent (with 30 California days to count) keep your eyes on this race #TakeBacktheHouse
In #CA7 @BuzzPatterson has an absolute shot to flip this seat, rally around him, he's awesome! #TakeBacktheHouse
#CA25 learned it's lesson thanks to Katie Hill, 45.6% voted Democrat 52.9% voted Republican, these numbers will probably fluctuate as this district loves to ballot harvest but @MikeGarcia2020 could take it if the party rallies together #FliptheHouseRed

When we started @justicedems there was only one litmus test for candidates - No Corporate PAC Money. That's now been so successful that others are taking credit for it & many establishment Democrats are signing on, including my opponent in #CA25 race! There is one big problem 1/5
Now establishment politicians have found a loophole, which is to launder the corporate money through other political PACs. In fact, my opponent @ChristyforCA25 is the master of this. She claims to take no corporate money but in reality has Koch Brothers money funneled to her! 2/5
Some examples. @ChristyforCA25 takes money from SHP PAC. They take money from PG&E, UnitedHealth, BlueCross BlueShield and Sempra Energy. Sempra Energy is the parent company of the Aliso Canyon facility that caused the worst gas leak in American history-- in this district! 3/5

If you're watching the #CA25 race, here are a couple very real possibilities, with gifs. 1/10
Rumor is the special election will be May 5th or 12th. Either would mean that the primary would be concurrent with the Presidential primary election on March 3. This election would be over 50% Dem because of the Presidential Primary electorate.

But a May Runoff? Ouch. 2/10
Whichever Dem makes the runoff will be forced into a unless they win a 50% outright victory in March. This most likely scenario is that a Dem and a Rep march toward a low-turnout election in a swing district. 3/10

A good, hard-working progressive woman was driven from Congress today by a vindictive soon-to-be-ex husband and a right-wing troll posting revenge porn of a non-traditional relationship and mischaracterizing the rest. /1
Yes, the relationship with a staffer was inappropriate and we need to protect workers in the workplace, but powerful straight men do this sort of thing all the time without repercussions, especially in Congress. There is a massive, sexist double standard at work. /2
We will foil the right-wing troll by keeping the 25th district in Democratic hands. We will use every tool in the playbook to hold both of them legally accountable for their actions and make sure this never happens to anyone else. /3

🚨MY MASTER THREAD of #Midterm2018 results analysis, including an array of data dives. Will the country chose to repudiate president Trump? Health care instead of the wall? RT & strap in, folks, tonight could be a wild ride. We get the first batch of results at around 6 PM ET.
Turnout has looked unprecedented for weeks now. Indications today that it could even beat these lofty expectations. At this point I think I’d buy for pickups in Tossup sub/urban seats like #TX07 #TX32 and #TX26, but sell in more rural districts that have looked like reaches.
