I’m at a meeting being hosted by ICE in Frederick County, MD regarding the county’s 287g program. To say tensions are running high is a total understatement. The meeting hasn’t even started yet
This man was briefly ejected from a meeting after he got into a verbal dispute with a man who repeatedly called him “black man.” He was just let back in and people cheered for him. Here he is explaining what happened
Sheriff Chuck Jenkins opens the meeting, which is held annually to offer information about the county’s cooperation with ICE. Jenkins is a big supporter of the program and says tonight will show the undisputed real value of the program
People hold up signs saying “false” when the sheriffs office gets to this slide
People also laugh when the officer says enforcement does not occur on the streets or at places of employment. Sheriff Jenkins threatens to end the meeting if people don’t keep proper order
Ejected from the* meeting
Sheriffs office now running through a litany of statistics showing how 287g protects the community by removing individuals charged w the following crimes
Now, meeting attendees are being treated to the results of an audit of Frederick County’s IGSA with ICE. This is not 287g. I don’t know all details of Fredericks agreement but in other counties, jails agree to hold detainees for ICE in return for a per diem
Frederick County gets paid $83 per detainee per day by ICE, the accountant who performed an audit of the IGSA says. Here’s a link to the IGSA for your reading pleasure scribd.com/document/22589…
Aruna Miller, member of the MD House of Delegates who is running for Congress in Maryland’s 6th, is also here. The same man who was saying “black man” to the man in the video above walked up to her, said he’s a Democrat but isn’t voting for her
Speakers start. I’ll be spelling names as best as I can guess but forgive mistakes. Ed Burrell is up first - he says “our sense of justice has been assaulted by the outrageous actions of ICE” and asks the county to cancel its agreement
Each speaker gets two minutes. Now up is Jay Jimenez, who I spoke to earlier and who identified himself then as being with @aclu of Maryland. He reads statistics saying most people detained under 287g have committed minor crimes
Here’s Sara Movahed, who identified herself as an immigration attorney and Frederick resident, speaking against 287g. All of the five speakers so far have spoken against the program
One speaker says her family members have been asked for their immigration status during traffic stops. Sheriff Jenkins says he doesn’t believe any officer of Frederick County is out on the street asking about immigration status. People yell “it happened to me” and jeer
Jenkins denies that the 287g program discourages Hispanic residents from reporting crime, calling it a “so-called chilling effect.” He adds: “Its a false narrative.”
Here’s @arunamiller speaking against the 287g agreement
Andrew Arthur of the Center for Immigration Studies now speaking, as the first person to speak in favor of 287(g)
Next pro-287g speaker is Jonathan Hanen, from Federation for American Immigration Reform. He cites federal prison stats to make point that undocumented immigrants are a disproportionate pub safety threat. Of course, some say using those stats is misleading google.com/amp/s/mobile.n…
Now a woman who identified as child of immigrants is speaking in favor of the program. She’s getting interrupted by crowd members while making her points, and Jenkins quieted the crowd. She cites this Post story to emphasize the local danger of MS 13 google.com/amp/s/www.wash…
Another pro 287g speaker. You can get a sense of how tense it is here from part of the crowd’s reaction to what he says
Here’s an immigrant woman speaking in favor of 287g here in Frederick. Apologies but I missed her name.
Here’s another anti-287g speaker, the same man who was in the video I posted earlier. He says the sheriffs office is engaging in fear mongering and racism. You can see him interact w the man who called him “black man” at the end of the video
People waiting to speak
Sheriff Jenkins denying that any racial profiling occurs in Frederick County
Clayton Boone, 17, says “MS-13 is actively recruiting at our schools” and are “targeting students who are illegal immigrants.” Also says he thinks term “criminal illegal immigrants” is a redundant term
Sheriff Jenkins says if there are real complaints about racial profiling, people should complain to the sheriffs office or ICE. Some in crowd laugh, saying people are afraid. He responds, “For those who don’t like the program, you’re never going to trust anybody.”
This is the man who apparently called the man in my earlier videos “black man.” He is speaking here in favor of Frederick County cooperating with ICE
Meeting ended about ten minutes ago
Should add one last thing - this woman spoke and said she was pulled over by a police officer for a traffic stop, and he then asked her to show him her passport. He was so annoyed with her that he ripped up her ticket, she says
