In today´s @welt: My report about the hunt for the #ISIS suspect who allegedly „guided“ the #Berlin Christmas Market attacker #AnisAmri. Details in the following thread ⬇️ /1 #Breitscheidplatz #terrorism #UA1BT
#AnisAmri was in contact with an #ISIS suspect for several weeks prior to the #Breitscheidplatz attack. They communicated via Telegram messenger. Amri´s name was „Anis Abu Al Barra“ (Abumos), his ISIS contact´s name was „Moadh Tounsi“ (moumou1) /2 #UA1BT #terrorism
After the #Breischeidplatz attack the police found Amri´s HTC smartphone near the truck he used. Investigators were able to retrieve several Telegram chat messages, pictures and voice messages /3 #AnisAmri #UA1BT #terrorism #ISIS
According to the Telegram chat Amri and #ISIS contact „moumou1“ were in contact in the minutes just before the attack in #Berlin on December 19th 2016 /4 #UA1BT #terrorism
„Please stay in contact with me!“, Amri wrote to his #ISIS handler at 7.16 pm on Dec 19th 2016. Amri had just left the Fussilet Mosque in #Berlin and was on his way to the truck /5 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri #Breitscheidplatz
„Brother, everything was successful!“, Amri wrote after he shot the truck driver. He then sent a picture from driver cabin of the truck, followed by a voice message: "I am in the car now, do you understand? Pray for me!“ /6 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri #Breitscheidplatz #ISIS
On November 10th 2016 „moumou1“ had sent a PDF file (143 pages) to #AnisAmri. The #ISIS document is about suicide attacks and the author states that the killing of civilians is allowed in Jihad /7 #UA1BT #terrorism #Breitscheidplatz
#BKA investigators believe „moumou1“ acted as a „guide“ and „mentoring person“ to AnisAmri. He encouraged Amri to carry out the terrorist attack /8 #UA1BT #terrorism #Breitscheidplatz
#ISIS „guides“ were involved in several terrorist attacks / plots in recent years. Often the attacker was contacted via encrypted messaging services like Telegram or WhatsApp. For more read this piece by @rcallimachi: nytimes.com/2017/02/04/wor… /9 #UA1BT #terrorism #Breitscheidplatz
Soon after the #Breitscheidplatz attack German investigators tried to identify #AnisAmri´s guide „moumou1“. Several Facebook accounts were contacted with the Telegram account. They were set up by someone using Tunisian and Libyan IP adresses /10 #UA1BT #terrorism
In April/May 2017 the #BKA got the news an #ISIS suspect named „Abu Muadh al-Tunisi“ had been killed in #Libya. Question was: „Moadh Tounsi“ (moumou1) = „Abu Muadh al-Tunisi“? /11 #UA1BT #terrorism #Breitscheidplatz
Libyan „Special Forces“ had killed the terrorist suspect on January 5th 2017 near #Benghazi and posted several pictures of the incident on Twitter /12 #UA1BT #terrorism #Breitscheidplatz #AnisAmri
One of the Facebook accounts linked to #ISIS guide „moumou1“ had stopped any activities on January 4th 2017, #BKA investigators noted. Question: Had „moumou1“ been killed in #Libya? /13 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri
#BKA raised the question about the identity of the killed #ISIS suspect „Abu Muadh“ to Libyan authorities via Interpol Tripolis. Allegedly the person´s real name was Hassen B. /14 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri
For several months there was no news about the fate of „moumou1“. In September 2017 #BKA was informed by Tunisian authorities that they had allegedly identified the #ISIS „guide“ /15 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri
On September 19th 2017 two #BKA investigators and one prosecutor from the German Federal Prosecutor´s office traveled to Tunis for further talks /16 #UA1BT #terrorism #AnisAmri
Tunisian Garde National officials presented the German delegation with the results of the investigation: „moumou1“ was identified as Tunisian national Mahir D., born December 1985, suspected of fighting with #ISIS in #Libya /17 #UA1BT #AnisAmri #Tunisia
One important trace leading to Mahir D. was a money trail from Germany: #AnisAmri had sent money to #Tunisia in the weeks and days before his attack, using a middleman in Berlin /18 #UA1BT #Breitscheidplatz #ISIS
On December 9th 2016 the middleman Bilel Y. had sent 700 Euros via Western Union to a person in #Tunisia named Chaker D. Allegedly #AnisAmri claimed this was a relative of his /19 #UA1BT #Breitscheidplatz #ISIS
Chaker D. was questioned by Tunisian police and claimed his brother Mahir D. was fighting with #ISIS in #Libya. He allegedly tasked #AnisAmri to sent money. Investigators identified several Facebook profiles and Telegram accounts linked to Mahir D. /20 #UA1BT #Breitscheidplatz
#BKA and the German Federal Prosecutor´s Office were convinced by the findings of Tunisian investigators. It remains unknown if Mahir D. aka „moumou1“ is still alive. His whereabouts are not known /21 #UA1BT #Breitscheidplatz #ISIS #AnisAmri
And here is the online version of the article "Where is moumou1"?, published in @welt on June 14th 2018: welt.de/politik/deutsc… /22 #AnisAmri #UA1BT #Breitscheidplatz #terrorism
