As History would have it, the United States has been sanctioning the breaking up of families since before 1865. Especially, African parents from their children. 
Like enslavement, the breaking up of families was seen as Biblically sanctioned because Africans were seen as property and therefore should obey they white masters.
White supremacy’s request for submission to Christian ideals by Africans that were enslaved were challenged regularly. The biggest and most notable protest and blow - Nat Turner.
A charismatic preacher himself, Nat Turner felt that God divinely selected him to lead a rebellion that would slaughter dozens of whites (men, women, children). Often hacking and chopping them up with axes in August, 1831.
Opened to the chapter of Revalations, the @NMAAHC currently has Nat Turner’s Bible on display. It is believed that he had this Bible on him when he was captured two months after the rebellion he led against slaveholders in Southampton County, Virginia.
As a response to his revolt, Virginia and other colonies enforced stricter laws on the enslaved and free Blacks as a way to suppress future cases of retaliation. This laws would be the grandfather laws to Jim Crow several decades later.
As Expected, Nat Turner’s reactions were demonized and seen to be anti-Christian by whites at the time. But enslavement was still a morale question that was still debated upon.
All in all, what this tells us all is the white supremacy + Bible touting go hand in hand. Especially, when it colludes with the maintenance of dominance over people of color as it pertains to policy - for Black people, particularly.
This is exactly why I challenge the AG about his heinous unbiblical rhetoric. However, I’d be lying to you if I didn’t tell you that what he said is apart of our collective history and is as American as is apple pie. :/
