CCC Progress Report 2018

Today the Committee launches its 10th annual Progress Report to Parliament. What happened to UK emissions last year and what more needs to be done to meet our climate targets? (1/11)

#UKClimateAction
In 2017 global emissions rose by 1.4%, for the first time in several years. EU emissions also rose, by 1.8% (2/11) #UKClimateAction
UK emissions fell by 3% in 2017, and are now 43% below 1990 levels. Over the same period the economy has grown by over 70% (3/11) #UKClimateAction
As in the preceding four years, emissions reductions were dominated by reductions from the power sector, as renewables continued to replace fossil fuels. Transport continues to be the largest-emitting sector (4/11) #UKClimateAction
Since 1990 most progress reducing UK emissions has come from the power and waste sectors (5/11) #UKClimateAction
But there is limited further potential to reduce these emissions (e.g. coal is now less than 10% of electricity generation) (6/11) #UKClimateAction
Outside of power and waste there have been very limited emission reductions in the last 5 years. Transport emissions have increased (7/11) #UKClimateAction
Simple and low-cost measures to reduce emissions are currently being missed - for example onshore wind (in the power sector), insulation (buildings), and tree planting (land use and forestry) (8/11) #UKClimateAction
Delivery risks for carbon budgets are still too high – we need to see real committed and effective policies outside power and waste (9/11) #UKClimateAction
The bold approach to reducing power sector emissions should be extended to other sectors, in order to get on track to meet carbon budgets and the 2050 target (10/11) #UKClimateAction
There is a lot that the Government needs to do, over the next year and beyond, in order to turn its ambitions into the set of policies that will drive decarbonisation in line with the 4th and 5th carbon budgets and the Paris Agreement (11/11) #UKClimateAction
