Putin's immediate objective was always to end sanctions to have access to his & oligarchs' money. Trump now admits the dirt part of their conspiracy b/c the earlier adoption cover story actually revealed the quid-pro-quo at Trump Tower meeting: Sanctions relief for election help.
The Kremlin wanted sanctions relief & brought them up incessantly. Way back in July 2015 Russian agent Maria Butina asked candidate Trump if he supported ending "damaging sanctions" on Russia. He said: "I don't think we'd need the sanctions. Putin & I would get along very well."
Flynn covered up that he had talked to Russian ambassador Kislyak about sanctions in December 2016. He later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about those conversations.
Flynn even said Russia sanctions would be "ripped up right away" when Trump took office, per whistleblower. Flynn, like Trump, expected to make out like thieves from their "good" relationship with Russia. Democracy be damned. Greed is a weakness Kremlin exploits again & again.
The Kremlin continually pressed team Trump about sanctions, and team Trump kept reassuring them. Let's not forgot that Trump likely approved and even directed Michael Flynn to assure Russian ambassador Kislyak in texts and phone conversations not to worry about Russia sanctions.
It's always about sanctions with Putin: Russians participated in secret meetings with Trump advisers in the Seychelles "on the need for the lifting of US sanctions to facilitate trade." Putin wants access to his dirty money. His kleptocracy depends on it. Team Trump's on board.
Putin even brought up sanctions in a private meeting with Trump last July at G-20. Trump said they talked about "adoption" which he "ALWAYS found interesting." That was a clear reference to Russia sanctions, which Trump had obviously discussed lifting many many times before.
Putin's active measures attack on America to get Trump elected was first and foremost about sanctions. Trump's been paying back this debt to Russia since. Jan 2018: Kremlin oligarchs & officials celebrated when Trump sabotaged near unanimous US congressional sanctions.
Kremlin oligarchs were shaken by targeted sanctions Congress enacted last August for disrupting our election. But Trump's WH made a last-minute bait+switch, replacing a list with teeth with a laughable list copied from Forbes & Kremlin website. Tough on Russia? More like payback.
Trump continues to sabotage sanctions, paying Putin back for disrupting our election. Mnuchin has given close Putin oligarch Deripaska a pass for months as he appeals to get off list; Mnuchin "doesn't want to put RusAl out of business." THIS is why Russia continues attacking us.
