Ohboy. @WIRED, you should know that digitisation isn’t preservation. Digitisation isn’t digital archiving. Digitisation isn’t free or easy. That it’s not a competition between preserving languages & scanning museums. That crowdsourcing is ace but also requires resources.
I'm going to use this sorry state of an article in class to discuss the popular misconceptions around digitisation in the cultural heritage industry. @WIRED there is a whole community of digitisation professionals out there who could have responded had you bothered to ask.
& at the heart of this is a huge loss, @WIRED, which many people in our community are grieving over. Many people who have devoted their professional and personal lives to increasing access to cultural heritage by using advanced digital methods. We are not the enemy at this time.
