GP I think it is more important to punish Democrats for the violation of Senate process and basic American notions of due process than it is to continue to look into decades-old, uncorroborated, unresolvable allegations against Kavanaugh.
GP And I'll tell you why. Democrats' disregard of basic procedure, the presumption of innocence, and due process (not to mention Senate collegiality, whatever that is) is more dangerous to the Republic than seating a person accused on an unverified act decades ago.
GP If we as a nation decide to jettison rule of law, the game is over. We might as well pack it in now and go into full on warlord mode because we will not be able to live together as a free society any more.
GP We will have devolved into guilt by mere accusation, no procedural protections for the accused, and rewarding the politics of personal destruction. The damage to society from this turning point is far more dangerous than one of nine votes on the Supreme Court.
GP Yes, sexual assault is a serious issue. But where, as here, there is no corroboration and it is patently clear (Democrats don't even attempt to deny it) that Democrats are playing politics with Ford's allegations, the decision is clear.
GP To permit Democrats to "win" by ignoring procedure, law, and basic human decency is to permit rule of men to reign. Rule of man never ends well for any society. It is the most destructive thing to societal freedom. If you don't believe me, ask Venezuelans.
GP Republicans cannot let Democrats "win" here by killing the Kavanaugh nomination without any corroboration of the charges whatsoever. Nor can Repubs reward Democrats for playing politics with Ford's allegations. If Democrats get away with this, the rules are forever changed.
GP I would remind Democrats who were thrilled with cramming Obamacare down on a party line vote, or the original Borking, or Reid's getting rid of the filibuster, or Preezy PenNPhone's executive orders that they do not like the consequences of their actions with Repubs in charge.
GP And no one will like an America where individual rights are ignored (along with the Constitutional protections therefor) in service of political wins. This isn't American. It's Stalinist. It's a routine strongman con.
GP Republicans need to couch their opposition to any further delays in these terms. We are choosing rule of law and the survival of the Republic over uncorroborated allegations and Democrat games. We are sorry Prof Ford was subjected to this by the Democrats.
GP But to reward Democrats' malicious and political smear of Kavanaugh is a bridge to far, one that would require Republicans to violate their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution.
GP Show some spine. Stand up to Democrats and explain it in these plain terms. Democrats are asking Americans to accept jettisoning of rule of law and fundamental notions of fairness so liberal SCOTUS justices will continue legislating from the bench on issues Congress can't pass
GP This is a good hill to die on. Trust Americans to understand. At least that's what I think.
