I have had a deeply depressing discussion today with @BritishQuakers. They have decided to boycott goods from the West Bank.
Leaving aside both the fact that I detest the occupation & the efficacy of any boycott I’m disturbed that Israel has been, apparently, singeled out. There
are occupations in, for example, Tibet. Sri Lanka has massacred an entire ethnic minority. Pakistan routinely fails to protect Christians. Yet none of these are deemed worthy of boycott - as @BritishQuakers confirmed.
Why not? Depressingly I have now asked the q 4 times without
being given an answer. What I HAVE been given is more depressing yet. @BritishQuakers boycott arms traders. They did boycott the slave trade & apartheid. An express equivalence has been drawn between all those things today. I don’t think that was deliberate- I think it was a
product of muddled thinking and a basic lack of knowledge. But one would expect an avowedly religious and tolerant body to demonstrate neither.
Why single out the Jewish state? There is no answer. One would also expect @BritishQuakers to know that boycotts have particularly
unpleasant overtones for Jews. Boycotts are how Christianity expressed its malevolence. I find it surprising & upsetting that @BritishQuakers could not find it within themselves to acknowledge that. It makes their stance yet more difficult to explain.
We aren’t dealing with the
stupid & unpleasant left here - at least I assume not. @BritishQuakers are a group that talks the talk but appear, in this instance, to be tone deaf to the effect of their actions.
It will not make a jot of difference to Israel but it will be rejoiced in by the enemies of Jews.
Worse, the failure to acknowledge any difficulty, the lack of thought, the complacency which told me that they boycotted the slave trade, so boycott Israel, sounds to me like old-fashioned Christian antisemitism. That unhappy impression was reinforced by @BritishQuakers use of
1 of the worst of @UKLabour’s vile tropes - “we have support from some (unnamed) Jewish groups”.
Such reliance on useful Jews is a hallmark of antisemites. How could that ever justify treating the Jewish state differently to every other state?
As I say, depressing.
With thanks to those who’ve responded, it appears that @BritishQuakers may, in fact, be the stupid left. I hadn’t known they’d hosted both islamofascists and STW’s coterie of antisemites.
facists.
