While welcome, @Europarl_EN's attempt to engage citizens ahead of the #StateoftheEU ("discover and contact the MEPs you elected") only highlights the disconnect created by our electoral system based solely on national lists. #StrongerTogetherEU 🇪🇺 1/3
europarl.europa.eu/soteu/en/
By relying on large & purely proportional lists of candidates, EU elections lead citizens to vote exclusively for a party, while ignoring everything about the candidates themselves and, therefore, about their representatives in the #EuropeanParliament. #StrongerTogetherEU 2/3
The solution is to mix local electoral districts & Member State-based lists w/ overall proportionality (cf. German #Bundestag). All candidates and lists would run across #Europe under the banner of the same #EuropeanParties. #StrongerTogetherEU 3/3

I am afraid #RuleOfLaw could become a victim of the EU's #recoveryfund and #MFF negotiations.

Let me explain briefly using the data from @ecfr's new #EUCoalitionExplorer [thread, 1/7]

#RethinkEurope @MercatorDE

On the face of it, most EU members are in favour of pressing hard for the protection of #RuleOfLaw by the EU institutions, including through the development of new tools [2/7]

public.tableau.com/views/EUCoalit…
But #RuleOfLaw is 2nd order issue for most EU members. Only in FI, NL, SE, LU, ES, MT does it feature among TOP5 policy priorities, according to our survey of policy professionals. Not a single respondent in FR considers it an issue of high priority [3/7]

Thank you @weimers for the invitation. My 4 pts:
1. EU should use its economic leverage to pressure China
2. Magnitsky sanction against all violators of HR
3. Life-boat is welcome, but first we want to save HK
4. Radical protesters also need support, not just peaceful ones.
1. Adding human rights clauses is indeed important in Bilateral Investment Treaty, but signing the BIT itself at this moment is redering the EU dependent on China. EU should only sign the BIT if China lifts the #NationalSecurityLaw.
2. Magnitsky Act should sanction all officials that violate human rights in China and #Hongkong, from top officials like Carrie Lam to low ranking ones like returning officers and police officers.

while international community remain visibly silent, when it comes to #yemen, #SaudiArabia is facing astonishing ambitious western pressure, when it comes to the detention of a #Prince.

Yesterday, the Presidents of the #EuropeanParliament, #EuropeanCommission, #EuropeanCouncil and #ECB celebrated the 10 years of the #LisbonTreaty. It marked a step forward, yet the #EU remains blocked by unanimity and has not strengthened its democracy.
10 years after the #LisbonTreaty and despite a provision to the contrary, we are still forced to have exactly one Commissioner per Member State -- with no considerations for the efficiency of our #EU governance.
10 years after the #LisbonTreaty, the #EU remains unable to act swiftly to resolve crises, defend its interests and promote its values. Where is the EU in #HongKong? In #Ukraine? In #Xinjiang? Have we ensured social protection for all Europeans? A European defence?

For #GeorgeWashington, Great Britain waged a tariff war against the US, believing US States "never could unite in opposition to it". Until proven otherwise, the US would remain "in a ridiculous point of view in the eyes of the nations of the earth". Sounds familiar? #EUisthenewUS
In 1783, #Hamilton noted that "the road to popularity in each state is to inspire jealousy of the power of Congress, though nothing can be more apparent that [Congress has] no power." Sounds familiar? #EuroBashing #EuropeanParliament #EUisthenewUS
In 1787, Charles Pinckney of #SouthCarolina had concluded that the "depressed situation of the union is undoubtedly owing" to this "absurd" requirement of unanimous consent for amendments. Sounds familiar? #EUreform #TreatyChange #EUisthenewUS

1/3) A note on the European elections #EuElection2019

The #EuropeanParliament does not have a government.

This means that the system does not operate like a national parliament.

To be a successful parliamentarian means having to work the committees.
2/3) Successful committee work rewards parliamentarians who can build consensus.

Those who are nuanced, enjoy the detail, read research, and engage in compromise are winners in this system.

Conflictual ideologues, flag wavers, and oppositional politics are not rewarded.
3/3) Therefore if you want your vote to have the most impact, vote for a parliamentarian who is best suited to doing committee work.

This might sound boring. But that's how the EU works.

Thread:

I doubt the EU-27 will accept the PM’s new 22 May date for the extension of #Article50 #Brexit deadline for at least four reasons:
- They’ve been stung before by #TheresaMay saying she needs “just X weeks”, with that then turning out to be longer
- They know she needs time for the legislation, even if #MV4 gets through #Commons and that there will still be internal opposition to it at that stage

#EuropeanParliament calls on Council to:
✅ transform into a true legislative chamber for a real bicameral legislature, with the @EU_Commission as the executive
✅ replace consensus with qualified majority
Exactly the #EUReform that @VoltEuropa calls for! #VoteVolt #EP2019
From @VoltEuropa's policies: "In the short term, and in order to bring coherence into the Council’s work, Volt supports abolishing the Council’s system of topic-based configurations and replacing them with a single representative for each State."... #VoteVolt #EP2019

Today, @CER_EU publishes my piece on #Brexit and #JHA. I have been looking at this for 1,5 years so I hope I did not make too many mistakes (links to piece - cer.eu/publications/a… and opens thread)
At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
