1) Spain’s centre left PSOE has lost the regional election in Andalusia for the first time. A slap in the face for PM Sanchez
2) VOX - far right populists have seats for the first time in a parliament - regional or national - in Spain. V possibly picking up support from those fed up with the traditional ruling parties. Pattern we’ve seen in so much of Europe
3) Big winner in Andalusia is the centrist Ciudadanos Party (which actually is pretty centre right)
4) While PSOE won the biggest number of votes they’ve lost the ability to form a government. What now?
5) This is a big, big political change for Spain. Spain’s establishment did not see VOX’s success coming. Many will fear its influence will now spread beyond this unexpectedly strong showing in Andalusia

EU and UK negotiatiors spent months thinking round bilaterally acceptable solutions to the backstop. They arrived at current document. Reminder: the UK-wide customs arrangement with the EU featured in the backstop was requested by HMG not Brussels 2
Withdrawal Agreement already says EU open to alternatives to backstop eg using technology if and when viable BUT EU no deal planning documents clearly say in case if no deal #Brexit some physical checks will have to take place. Technology alone doesnt cut the mustard for the EU 3

Don't assume EU will now suddenly sacrifice Ireland and backstop because needs UK trade. EU will a) not want to be seen to abandon a member of the club in order to reach a deal with soon to be outsider UK (Remember the Spain-Gibraltar hold-up in Nov?) and 1
EU has repeated over and again it won't abandon the backstop. To extent that it - apart from other issues - will look weak if it suddenly changes position. Brussels will be mindful of reputation as tough customer in international world of trade deals. This isnt just about UK 2
EU hanging back till can work out if backstop is main sticking point in Westminster or if it's more about future EU-UK relationship. If backstop then expect some movement eventually but hardly likely to be unilateral out for UK or fixed time limit. Maybe a review at fixed time? 3

After blunt statement yesterday on hard border being outcome of a no deal #Brexit Commission spks @MargSchinas today underlines "EU is fully behind Ireland" and "EU is determined to do all it can, deal or no deal, to avoid the need for a border and to protect peace in NI" but 1
In its no deal planning document from December the Commission stated that checks on livestock and agri products would take place after a no deal #Brexit EU juggling protecting Good Friday Agreement with protecting its single market 2
One option on table is having checks in France/Netherlands so as to avoid having them on island of Ireland but this would have clear impact on Irish trade. This is a very delicate intra-EU debate. EU keen to show solidarity with member state Ireland 3

I’m a trained political scientist, not a journalist. But every time I do on-the-ground reporting, I’m struck by how much I learn—and how much it changes my view of the situation on the ground.

That was definitely the case this time around.
The last months have changed my mind on two important things, in particular:

First, the far-right in Germany is much more sophisticated, and their alternative media universe way more developed, than most of us have realized.

This ain’t going away anytime soon.

Radicalization is the conversation we must have. Trump sends troops for fake immigrant invasions while his information war has created the real threat. He & GOP propaganda media are radicalizing far-right extremists—terrorists to terrorize & kill Americans. Also BTW Putin's goal.
You'd think after Americans were killed by terrorists radicalized by lies about migrants, Republican @MarshaBlackburn would take down this ad claiming the caravan has “gang members, known criminals, people from the Middle East, POSSIBLY EVEN TERRORISTS"
