#HistoryKeThread: Then British Governor of British East Africa, Col. Sir James Hayes Sadler (2nd right), rides the train from Mombasa with his guest, Sir Winston Churchill (r), then Secretary of the Colonies, in 1907.
Sir Churchill, 33, had just begun his tour of East Africa.
The visit was a morale booster somewhat for Sadler, who months back had faced calls from right wing settlers to resign from office.
Led by Bailey and Lord Delamere, respectively representatives of Nairobi and Njoro, the settlers wanted the British government to limit the acreage set aside for game reserves in favour of more land for farming purposes.
I suspect, but cannot conclude with certainty, that Bailey is the same man who a few years earlier while serving as an officer of 3KR (3rd battalion of the King’s African Rifles), had sentenced an african askari in the regiment to 25 lashes for insubordination.
Using a whip made from the hide of a hippopotamus, “a burly Nubian askari from the regiment” meted out the flogging to the askari until he bled profusely.
The account of this flogging, which left Col. Meinertzhagen, the regiment’s commanding officer, astonished by its intensity, even made it to the report of the 2008 Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission chaired by the late Ambassador Bethuel Kiplagat.
Alas....I digress.
In these images taken a day after the train ride from Mombasa, Governor Sadler presides over formal ceremonies to receive Churchill in Nairobi.
I believe the ceremony took place in an area close to present-day Tom Mboya Street.
