Love Corbyn. HATE Brexit? Here’s a thread highlighting some of the stats from our @ESRCPtyMembers survey of 1034 Labour Party members together with a representative sample of 1675 voters.
83% of Labour members voted Remain in 2016. And 89% think, in hindsight and irrespective of what they themselves voted in 2016, that the UK was wrong to vote to leave the EU.
72% of Labour members (compared to 57% of current Labour voters and 61% of 2017 Labour voters) want Corbyn to fully support a new referendum on Brexit.
88% of members say their first preference in a 3-way referendum would be Remain; 3% say leave with May’s deal & 5% say no deal. The figures for current Labour voters are 71%, 8%, and 12% respectively. 5/1
89% of Labour members (compared to 65% of current Labour voters and only 45% of all voters) are convinced that leaving the EU without a deal would have a negative impact on the economy in the medium to long term.
82% of Labour members think that the warnings of the severe short-term disruption that no deal might cause are realistic – something only 35% of the electorate as a whole (although 58% of Labour voters) think is the case.
65% of Labour members think Corbyn is doing well as leader compared to 33% who think he’s doing badly. Figures for voters as a whole are 24% well and 61% badly, while for 2017 Labour voters, its 41% and 45% respectively.
58% of Labour members reckon that Corbyn could probably get a better Brexit deal than Mrs May – far, far more than the 13% of the electorate (and more than the 40% of current Labour voters and 29% of 2017 Labour voters) who think so.
23% of Labour members put Corbyn’s failure to endorse a new referendum down to his supporting Brexit. 34% think he’s worried about offending Leave voters. 12% think he’s biding his time. 12% think he objects in principle to another referendum. 9% think he’s undecided.
While 61% of Labour members regard Brexit as the number one issue facing the country, just under half of them 47% actively support their party’s stance on it.
29% of Labour’s rank and file actively oppose the stance that the party has taken on Brexit – and 56% of those who oppose it say it’s caused them to consider quitting (a proportion that is equivalent to around 88,000 members).
