@whatukthinks @YouGov I think MPs instinctively know, from their constituency work that the nation isn't clamouring for a second vote - as Curtice concludes.

@whatukthinks is one of the few honest brokers in the guns-for-hire polling business. I basically stick with him and ignore the noise. /ENDS

The first issue is that May can’t define “alternative arrangements” without exploding her majority.

Viewed from Brussels the Brady votes doesn’t send an “emphatic message”. It’s just the same old mess. /2
Brady is happy with a “codicil” (the interpretive statement the Brits tried and failed to get in Dec) but Boris, Baker and co are clearly not.

Hardline ERG want to ‘bin the backstop’ - which will not happen.

The point is the vote conceals a mess. /3

@MrHarryCole Well. It looks like chicken time...get EU to get IE to tweak backstop, on peril of a no-deal, and the very hard border both sides trying to avoid.

But some big probs with this strategy, or rather accessing the space where the tweak-for-a-deal gets done. 1/
@MrHarryCole 1. The EU don’t buy a U.K. govt wd ever go for a no deal. They just can’t see a rational govt inflicting that level of self-harm. When you’d still need to negotiate a deal - from your knees, with no legal roof (transition) and Irish/Spanish vetos in play /2
@MrHarryCole 2. The ERG are so far out of the deal zone (Brady/Murrison that wants to rip up irish protocol and replace with one line of “we commit to no hard border”. Not sure that offer even opens a discussion in Brussels. /3

Lots of shrapnel around on the Irish border and what happens in a 'no deal'.

Brexiteers now reckon they've caught out Commission, exposed it as a "hoax" since Barnier says checks can be down without hard border.

What's going on? Thread after chats. /1
This all stems from a Barnier remark saying that EU will have "to find an operational way of carrying out checks and controls without putting back in place a border.”

Which, to cut a long story short, followed Irish outrage over previous Commission statements saying the a 'no deal' would bring back a hard border, both from Commission spox, but also Barnier himself.

I promised I would share my findings from the DWP event that I attended today, but I'm not sure if a twitter thread is the best mode of dissemination. I asked as many Q's as I could, and pushed until I got straight answers. They confirmed an absolute disregard for duty of care
We all know the DWP doesn't give a shit about people, but after pushing for straight answers and making the atmosphere very tense, it was shocking to hear how little regard there is for the wellbeing of benefits claimants - namely through acknowledged absence of any safeguarding
The event I went to was at Brighton Job Centre. We were told this was for Brighton specifically, yet after Q's about e.g. bouncers on doors, were told that this was national policy, that "lots of things here are national policy" so no accountability at the local OR national level

First, the name. It’s dumb. What they really mean is, a second vote because we lost the first one. We had a people’s vote already. Who do they think voted last time, fridge magnets?
Anyway… the so-called People’s Vote campaign doesn’t really want another vote - it wants another answer. It is entirely about seeking to stop Brexit.

Short thread on importance of even the smallest elections:

1) My small coastal town has 3 seats up for city council next month. #vote
2) Of those running for city council, 5 believe in climate change, 4 don't. All but 2 candidates GOP. 3/5 climate believers here GOP. #vote
3) Last city council election, only 20% registered Dems voted, because they saw majority of candidates were GOP and they dismissed them.
