rent isn't hot but i absolutely just read a thread full of people in their 40s all criticizing it, none of which - and i am being one hundred percent literal here - had understood even the most basic elements of the plot, and that was amazing
to their credit, i seriously suspect the vast majority of people in this country do not believe you can just go into a building that nobody else has been in for years and not leave, *or* that the landlords will fuck with you, *or* that the cops won't just kill you immediately
i think a tremendous number of people think that if you are in a place you "can't" be, that you "just" get evicted, when in reality like, even completely legal evictions are *incredibly* convoluted and if you don't leave the amount of power the cops have is incredibly variable
idk what's going on in nyc nowadays but i figure it's probably valid that if you're in an abandoned building and someone calls the cops you'll probably leave in a bodybag
but yeah i think it's pretty much impossible to understand the show if you don't get that the protagonists were all living as 24/7 criminals, a thing people really did, and do
you can hate it at that point (i understand the play really well, i used to like it, now i think it sucks) but you should at least, i mean, maybe hit the fuckin wiki page or something before you talk,
i hate it on the same grounds as Fight Club, which I don't actually hate but think absolutely failed in every single element of its intent; it's useless to anyone who has their shit figured out, and absolutely harmful to people who don't
fight club is a really fucking cool movie which nobody should be allowed to watch without some kind of subtle morality test beforehand, like someone drops their cellphone in the theater lobby and then hidden observers see what you do next and score you
