If the single payer plan is cheaper, people will choose it. "Cutting out the middle man" is smart, but politicians will LOSE if they talk about abolishing private health insurance plans that some voters like.
Funding high quality public schools and universities does not require abolishing private schools and universities. Same for health insurance. Let people choose. But the single payer public option should be available to every American citizen and at an affordable cost.
