Small thread on a curious thing that is in plain sight - that is how many people don’t get that the Conservative party is already dead. Its gone.
What you are seeing now in government is a simulacra. Its an imprint of the past.....
The party that goes by the name of conservatives often had very reactionary local members. But these were kept in place by 4 things
1. Deference to Socal & London elites
2. Deference to standards
3. Business interests more liberal than reactionary
4. A modestly of local aims
I know because I was raised in provincial middle class tourism on mother’s side. Country councillors followed London. They took their lead from conservative but soft liberal elites.
But now look closely...UKIP councillors & Tories are indistinguishable. And now even worse...
Even worse, deselection - almost unheard of 4 years ago is being unleashed. As the few remaining members take control backed by Aaron Banks et al the last small c conservatives are being purged....
There’s a lot to condemn about earlier Tories. But one thing they did was ensure that at worst Tory MPs were Lobby fodder that didn’t rock the boat - tradit conservatives.
Steve Baker, Fabricant, Mark Francois & the coming beneficiaries of deselection are essentially UKIPers
As such Britain will likely soon find itself in the midst of its biggest economic/political crisis since the war with a govt composed of MPs who 10years ago would’ve been voted in on protest votes as UKIP local town councillors.
As I said, the conservative party is dead.
