Thread number two as part of #CuratingExperiences: slides from my #PechaKucha on 'Archaeology is....'
/ @KnoleNT is an archbishops palace, passes to royalty & then to the Sackville family. This talk outlines archaeology as part of #InspiredbyKnole @HeritageFundUK
/ ....buildings. We have recorded the building from the top down. @MOLArchaeology have identified 20+ phases of roof construction from medieval to modern (image by John Miller)
/ Inside we have lifted flooboards & removed panelling revealing hidden elements of the #medieval palace including doors, windows & evidence for fires
/ Remember, archaeology is....a cost. Please allow for it in project budgets! Part of ours went towards #survey - Geomatics @MOLArchaeology recorded floor plans, elevations & reflected ceiling plans
/ Archaeology is....research. Historic prints & photos provide useful details about architecture, landscapes & people (different image from that used in presentation as I don't have that one to hand! This is from @NTimages)
/ Research allows for analysis and reconstruction drawings, such as this by Dave from @MOLArchaeology of the East Range as it looked during the early 16th century
/ Archaeology is.....#artefacts. These flints held at #Sevenoaks Museum are Neolithic / Bronze Age in date & were found @KnoleNT during the early 20th century
/ During #InspiredByKnole we have found some amazing #artefacts including 17th century letters....
/ a pot lid for a superior cold cream
/ and plenty of evidence that people enjoyed lots and lots of tobacco on site!
/ one of the most evocative finds was this message in a bottle - left by Sidney Doggett, who worked @KnoleNT from 1898 until 1960. We know this because he also left his name on the walls #graffiti
/ #graffiti of all sorts formed a big part of recording & research. @mjc_associates's work found hundreds across the house relating to all kinds of events & activities - including #smoking!
/ we even found #medieval #graffiti (text inscriptions) although it was left by the Archbishop of Canterbury himself is another question!
/ Archaeology is....#ritual. Plenty of evidence for that @KnoleNT - 17th century marks recorded by @jpwarchaeology & medieval burn marks recorded by @mjc_associates
/ and always expect the unexpected! These #modern ritual (ahem) artefacts were found in the Park
/ Archaeology is.....sharing. We've published papers in @CurrentArchaeo @archaeologymag & many others (still working on the cat meme!) - and a book is coming soon! #KnoleRevealed
/ Lots of press & media interest in the project too, including featuring on the 1st episode of #SecretsoftheNationalTrust @channel5_tv
/ We've run hundreds of events as part of #InspiredbyKnole including scaffold & 'behind the scenes' tours, lectures & family events, including annual events for #FestivalofArchaeology @archaeologyuk
/ Archaeology is....getting involved! Our volunteers are AWESOME
/ And last but not least - archaeology is.....helpful!
