Former UK Perm Rep to the EU Ivan Rogers: 'If in the end this [withdrawl agreement] is politically unsellable... then we are going to have a hard border across the island of Ireland.'
'If they don't have a hard border across Ireland they're going to have to have it somewhere else - in the Irish Sea or a border between Ireland & the rest of the EU. I don't think people have though hard enough about this in the EU.'
Rogers shares the view that Ireland will retain backing of other EU 27: 'This is a really vital indication of whether the institutions will in extremis' back a small member state under pressure from a big player.
Rogers says he believes EU does not want to ever trigger the backstop.
'EU are not going to reopen the text' They can 'fiddle around with the political declaration' maybe also add an explanatory codicil. Also this will 'go right the wire' - March EUCO and beyond.
Earlier Rogers said Ireland had 'played a blinder' on the backstop but 'maybe too much of a blinder'
