1. Haven’t seen this get much attention: about a week ago, the US Atty in ED Pa (Philly) took over a robbery case where Krasner’s office accepted a plea to “only” 3.5-10 years, and where the Feds though a max of 20 would do… something: justice.gov/usao-edpa/pr/f…
2. And boy, that highlighted quote: US Att’y looks forward to working w state and federal officials and the Philly Police.

See who he skipped over?

The one major *county* official: the DA. Krasner.

Trump giveth the First Step Act. His DOJ (tries to) taketh away local reforms.
3. And let’s be clear: that shift from a 10 yr max to a 20 yr max will likely provide abt no additional deterrent benefit, and as cases like Matthew Charles makes clear runs the real risk of locking someone up far past any need.

Also: increasingly not what many victims want.
4. Bet even a DOJ that makes fighting violent crime w all the best tools from the 1970s and 80s a top priority doesn’t have enough man-power to completely thwart efforts at smarter, saner approaches.

And perhaps just a one-off, and not first time this has happened. But still…
