This week was a #darkweek for unis in #PNG. Tuesday 1,000 days since the infamous incident on 8 June 2016 when police fired hundreds of life rounds at peacefully protesting students demanding PM not put himself above the law. No promised inquiry, nobody charged #whogavetheorder
@ScholarsAtRisk is keeping the issue of shooting at #UPNG students on 8 June 2016 alive, because it is a rare occurrence in a supposed democracy. Listen to my interview last year for ABC abc.net.au/radio-australi… #whogavetheorder #darkweek
#UPNG and #UNITECH Student Representative Councils still suspended indefinitely. The students voice has been silenced, and the government can sleep easy knowing no civil society group will threaten its hold on power. Here is the video they made:
Minister DHERST keeps giving deadly medicine of political interference in unis’ governance which has made patient so sick in the first place. Exceeding his authority, he appointed a Chancellor Kennedy at #UPNG who does not seem to understand what a University is #darkweek
#UNITECH Chancellor Kekedo was unlawfully appointed last year. She never got a degree herself, never writes anything down, and never reads anything. She is a disgrace and single-handedly responsible for the UNITECH debacle. #darkweek
Last year, the only two foreign Vice Chancellors were bullied out of the country based on nothing but inuendo, false allegations and political whim. I was arrested by corrupt cops, and banned from ever entering the country again. devpolicy.org/albert-schrams… #darkweek
#PNG apparently willing to up to its reputation for (political) witch hunts, chief killing and (academic) tribal fights. #darkweek
Since #UPNG shooting incident #8June2016 & ill-treatment of foreign academics, the international reputation of #PNG Universities remains shattered, and they will never again be able to hire fully qualified academics with work experience at world-class universities. #darkweek
This week a former student of #UNITECH, of which I was the Vice Chancellor for 2 terms and over 6 years, confided they had made a big mistake letting me go before my term was finished. A former non-academic colleague asked how we were doing #notsodarkweek
They can take your job, personal effects, and money. With all their lies, they can not take away your time or your education. Using those well you can turn all negatives into positives. Sorry for #PNG: things will need to go worse, before they get better. #notsodarkweek
