My experience in Lagos state, Eti Osa LGA Ilado/eti Osa and environs ward, Orile moba village (PU: 24/08/05/029) today 9th March 2019

I arrived at the polling unit at around 8.45am and the polling officers were yet to arrive.

I saw some youths sitting around though
I came back to the polling unit at about 10.45am

The polling officers had arrived.

I took a picture of the empty polling unit with ballot boxes arranged
Suddenly a fight broke out close to the PU.

I tried to record it.

Someone alerted the fighting mob & they all turned on me

My shirt was torn. Shoe damaged

I was beaten for recording the event of violence & my phone was seized

Thinner was poured on my face in a bid to get me
unconscious

When they couldn't unlock my phone, they came back to force me to unlock it

While I did so, I quickly deleted the video and showed them the phone while maintaining my innocence

After ensuring they couldn't find any incriminating material on my phone, they left me
I exited the PU without voting.

I have decided I will never again engage in this civic responsibility as long as it is at the risk of my wellbeing.

For the record, there were 3 policemen and 1 NSCDC personnel, plus a van full of soldiers patrolling the neighbourhood

Yet I was
almost lynched.

I was later told that some monies had been allocated to be shared at the PU, & local youths were demanding to be paid before voting commenced

They upturned the ballot boxes while attempting to prevent elections from holding

My attempt to record it was abortive
Voter apathy as I said earlier is a direct result of apathy

The risk of violence is too high in Lagos today, & the voters have wisely stayed away

If I had been killed today, the policemen, NSCDC & soldiers wouldn't have prevented it

It seemed like they had all been compromised
What I meant to say is that voter apathy is a direct result of **intimidation**
