In the mid-1800s, a million people died of famine in Ireland. Another two million fled the country as refugees, heading anywhere they could find work. Because they were Catholic, British laws deprived them of their right worship, vote, own property or guns.
But they mostly came to America, because freedom. Opportunity. Hope.

Protestants were scared they’d try to impose some sort of Catholic law.
Know-Nothings were “guarding” the polls to make sure immigrants didn’t vote. They brought guns.
By the end of the day, 22 people were dead. Including a priest. No one was ever convicted.
