The next steps? It raises two interesting points concerning Bercow’s ruling 1) why it is important and 2) its relation to the Art. 50 extenstion (thread)
1) why is it important? It’s reported as a game changer everywhere, yet it’s also reported it can be voted down by a majority. One would assume that if the PM now has a majority for her deal (it is not clear she does), she should also have a majority for voting on it. True?
Not really. Politicians need a cover to come around to the PM’s deal. What the ruling does is take away the cover. An MP would have to openly admit that (s)he changed his/her mind. The fact that this changes things shows that politics is a difficult business.
2) I confess I am still confused about Bercow’s ruling in light of the vote on the extension motion. Here’s that motion which was approved by the House
Para. 2 suggests that parliament could approve the deal between the motion and March 20. Isn’t that a parliamentary expression to hold such a vote?
