Sixteen years ago the United States invaded another country that had done nothing to it. Like most American wars, it was influenced by economic and xenophobic pursuits, war fever gripped both parties and most of the media helped fan the flames.
This morning I’m writing about the Spanish-American War. It’s the same story. So is the Mexican-American War. It happens over and over again and results in mass casualties of civilians, destabilization, and an erosion of America’s claimed principles.
We need to recognize the pattern and see how this keeps happening. We need to be aware of how people keep manipulating nationalism, white supremacy, and weaponized narrative for profit and power. That’s the only way we can stop this cycle.
Citizens have to start questioning our culture of militarism and endless war, the apparatus of the military industrial complex, the motives of politicians, patriotism as a whole, and the media’s reliance on profit and how that builds a warfare state.
So many people have died. Just millions of civilians who did nothing but exist in the wrong time in the wrong place, who were accidentally in the path of a war machine. We’ve destabilized regions, empowered dictators and terrorists. It has to end.
