Few things that didn't make it into the final piece:
* "Russian hacking/trolling" seemed too amateurish and haphazard to make any meaningful impact
* Trump is Americans' own creation, pretending otherwise is desperate self-deceit (same goes for Brexit)

Let me introduce some nuance to this thread by saying that TV pundits and anonymous web commentators are a microscopic minority while everyone I met in person on my US trip last year was nothing but nice, open-minded and welcoming. Especially in Minnesota, which I miss a lot.

Like, literally, they have detailed instructions from their Kremlin minders on what to cover, from which angles, which names are blacklisted from the air etc etc.

You know what freaks out most Russians about American politics? The sheer anti-intellectualism of the public discourse. Not only people don't know the basics of other cultures, but they aren't even aware of their ignorance and actually *refuse* to learn. That's unimaginable here.
Case in point: this tweet is still up:
Ridiculing American ignorance is a common TV trope. There is a whole genre of state-sponsored trolling where "prankers" with an impressive phone book call a U.S. senator and inquire them about non-existent countries and U.S. policy towards them, engaging in absurd dialogues.

56 years ago today the Soviet authorities brutally crushed a rally in Novocherkassk, a southern Russian town. Locomotive factory workers protested against food price hikes, increased production quotas and the general worsening of living conditions. 1/7
Their signs said: "[Give us] Bread, butter, bigger wages!" The protest was sparked by a careless remark by the factory's director: "If you can't afford meat, eat liver pies." A crowd of workers was machine-gunned down by the army and KGB, 26 were killed and 87 wounded. 2/7
The survivors, and even random people who just happened to be nearby, were quickly arrested, 7 were immediately executed and 105 shipped off to labor camps, convicted to 10 to 15 years each for "conspiring to overthrow the Soviet government." 3/7

Listen up kids. So when #Trump wants to replace #SNAP benefits with a box of prepackaged dry goods, it’s not just about #fruits and #veggies. It’s about power, race, ethnicity, labor, energy, disability, and language as well.
2) What people eat and what people are supposed to eat and what people had access to eat has always been informed by power. In ancient times, it may have been the nobility eating meat and wheat bread while peasants ate potages. Nowadays, it’s what people should not eat.
3) Just because people are poor does not mean that they do not have their own food preferences, ideas about food, or habits around food. Folks who use SNAP/#foodstamps will use their benefits, as they are able, to buy the food they can afford within these frameworks.
