Researching a lecture on Thatcher and German Reunification in 1990. It's striking how far some of her advisers stoked Thatcher's suspicion of Germany. This is Charles Powell, writing to her on 9 February 1990.
As her Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, once grumbled, it could be hard "to establish where Mrs Thatcher ended and Charles Powell began". Here Powell reports Thatcher's anxiety to keep Soviet troops in East Germany, "as a counter-balance to a united Germany". 10 February 1990.
And here's Thatcher in February 1990, impressing on President Bush the importance of the Soviet Union as a counter to German power. A dramatic shift for the Iron Lady of the West.
