0/ WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE DONE SOONER? - I often get asked by new founders, product managers, tech leads, etc “If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?”. I always say - prioritize learning how to #recruit. Here's why:
1/ LEARN TO RECRUIT WELL - It’s the single greatest skill. The tech world loves to romanticize the single visionary, but in reality, the impact is from the people who you rarely hear about. It’s not about the next available, it’s about the next best.
2/ GOOD RECRUITING is when you can get great people from different backgrounds to join your effort. Great people have a lot of options which means they sacrifice to join you. If there’s one thing you should focus on, there are so many reasons why it should be this (3-7).
3/ COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE - Especially in knowledge working, you’re only as good as the ideas produced/executed. A great team will catch mistakes, capitalize on opportunities, and make sure you’re not dropping the ball.
4/ REAL RECOGNIZE REAL - If you start early, it gets 10x easier over time. The people you recruited are naturally attracting other amazing people. With very little work from you, you’re now increasing the talent on your team at an incredible speed.
5/ STEEL SHARPENS STEEL - Not only does attracting talent become easier but so does growing the talent you have. The team passively picks up best practices from one another.
6/ THE HIGHEST OF ROIs - The top mistake I see people make here is they don’t put enough time into it. Even if it takes you 200 hours to make a hire, the hire would pay it back in 5 weeks. Points 3, 4, 5 all compound on one another. It’s the investment that keeps on returning.
7/ IT’S SO MUCH MORE FUN - When you do this right, you find yourself lucky and humbled to come into work every day. You realize that everyone is better than you at most things, and you push yourself to grow to be the leader they deserve.
