Lots to pull apart in today's #appgAI report with @TheBHF on patient perceptions of AI in healthcare. Let's explore bhf.org.uk/appg-AI-report
I'll save the recommendations for the end (cos they are the best bit). Awareness among patients about AI in heart/circulatory disease is low - NHS/govt seen as having the key role in informing the public
It's a shame we don't have more detail on who was surveyed - looks like they are patients with heart/circulatory disease, so perhaps more aware than general public?
Nevertheless - a strong desire for patients to be more informed about the use of AI in healthcare. Including views from patients that there are a lot of 'scare tactics' being used about AI
Given a short explanation of what AI could do in healthcare, patients were overwhelmingly in favour of using it (though 13% were unsure - be interesting to understand more about that)
And really interesting that patients might feel uncomfortable if their doctor DIDN'T consult AI if it were available to them. Despite this, super clear that people think human intelligence should be the deciding factor in medical decisions.
When it comes to data, patients seem broadly happy for their anonymised data to be used to develop AI for other patients (how realistic is it that it would be anonymised though?). People seem less confident in the security of the data though.
So what? Here are the recommendations from the report. @NHSX should start with some conversations with the public about AI and data sharing (long overdue - so I'm not hopeful).
Another recommendation is for the great resources provided by @patient_data to be more widely used for engagement - and extended to issues around AI.
This is another favourite of mine. Expand the widening digital participation programme to address potential inequalities in technology. I think we should go further though - AI can be used to explicitly tackle inequalities. Let's start there.
We need much more work in this space though. And broader work. Both to inform how we do things and to rebuild trust around these issues. As technology has surged ahead in the NHS, public engagement has remained a niche interest. End of thread.
BONUS: I found this question hidden away in the appendix. People seem much more confident in their data being used for AI if it's done by the NHS or academic researchers. If private firms are doing it, it should be in partnership with the NHS!
