I won this race because - after my son was senselessly murdered in 2012 - I stood up to do something about it.

I knew it was time to fight back.

I was just a Marietta mom. I loved my son Jordan more than anything else in this world.

After Jordan was murdered - I realized that nobody was going change our laws for us, so I had to do it myself.
After Jordan was ripped away from me, I did not stop being his mom.

Every single thing that I do is out of the love that I have for my son.

My love for Jordan is what I extend to the work I do in my community every single day.
I have faced attack after attack from the far right - but that hasn't stopped my work for families of #GA06.

The House has already passed gun safety legislation for the first time in decades, and there is much more to come.

My work on gun violence, healthcare, and many other issues is just starting.

And yes - as a woman of color I am proud to be part of the most diverse class in American history.

My experiences drive the work I am doing for my constituents. And nobody can take that away from me.

My son was murdered exactly six years ago to date. Every year, I am reminded that the title “reluctant activist” is painfully accurate.

This year, today comes just two months before I will fight for my son’s legacy in Congress - but it does not make the pain any less.

I know that I have been called to fight for change.

Because on the very same day I lost my son, there were 95 OTHER families in this country learning they, too, lost a loved one to gun violence.

[2/4]
On the day after I lost my son to gun violence, 96 families learned what I did the day before - they, too, lost a loved one to gun violence.

And since my son’s murder, almost 220,000 families have lost a loved one to gun violence.

Nothing. nothing happens.

Nothing happens then that didn't happen when an admitted rapist white supremacist became President.

Everyone keeps waiting for the critical moment that signals that it's all gone too far.

It already happened. We did nothing useful about it.
I know how everyone feels.

I get it. It's the same feeling I had when I was SURE that once we had video of the cops shooting an unarmed child, that things would finally change.

Because you think at some point it has to be obvious that it's all gone off the rails.

But nope.
People will continue to await the sign.

They will continue to wait for the signal in the sky that says "Now is the time to fight back"

And they'll ignore that it's been on the whole time.

3) Article focuses on kid w/hat & teacher. I'm not thinking about them. Both voluntarily participated in the exchange. Both are trying to make a point & are egging each other on. I want to talk about the OTHERS in that classroom, the students who did NOT choose this encounter.
