The Tories can swallow their own medicine. Michael Gove can't win an election because he's Scottish.

I'm not talking about me. I don't mind Scottish, but I don't vote Tory anyway. I'm talking about Tory voters
The Tories have done this to themselves. They've spent five years stirring up English nationalism among their own voters. That's the price you pay when you fuck with that kind of politics.
I'm not saying Gove will drive all the Tories away. Just . . . enough. Enough that the Tories won't win a majority.

I shouldn't worry too much. We're going to get a general election in a few weeks, and the Brexit party has to find hundreds of candidates, and that's going to throw up a few stinkers.
The death of UKIP is what happens to personality cults when the personality is removed.
take Farage out of UKIP, and suddenly there's no party left.
Farage is a one man band. As soon as he tries to be a party, with a large number of candidates, he is at the mercy of all these disastrous personalities that hover around the fringes.

Well, she's not bringing her vote this week, and she won't have a job by next week.
The formal leadership contest will begin on Monday. How long to do the voting? They'll have to move fast.
They'll want a new leader by the end of June
The first thing a new leader has to do is get to the summer recess in one piece. If they can do that, then they get two and a half months to work out what they do next.
The Tories have to do a Queen's speech in September. They probably can't even get that through.
Okay, a general election in early October. And that's when the Tories finally put a second referendum in their manifesto.

And those two tweets settle everything. The Brexiteers are against May's deal, and they're against it, Labour's against it.

The only question left is when will Theresa May resign.
I thought Theresa May would resign two years ago. And then I thought she'd resign every day since.
She didn't resign, that's true. But I was still right for two reasons. First, I'm always right. Second . . .
I said that Article 50 was a dead end. She could either drive down this two year dead end, hit a brick wall and resign when she couldn't get anything through parliament. (This turned out to be what happened)

The UK's second largest party is a centrist party.

It has 35 seats in Westminster and 62 seats in the Scottish parliament.

It has over 125,000 members.

The success of the SNP is uh, perhaps relevant to discussions of centrism, no?

That is, if you actually *mean* centrism.
Because the SNP is ACTUALLY centrist.

Not neoliberal.
Not Blairite.
Not Tory in all but name.

And I have my criticisms of the SNP because I'm a leftwing voter.

But that also proves that they're centrist tbh.

To not mention the SNP at all in this media storm is ridiculous.

Let's learn from history.

Back in 1989/90, the Community Charge was introduced by Margaret Thatcher in Scotland and then England and Wales. You probably remember it as the Poll Tax. Despite it being hugely unpopular, Maggie pressed ahead with the policy.
Maggie's argument was that the people had voted for the policy - after all, it had been in the Tory manifesto that had given her another landslide - so she had to deliver it and they could not change their minds.
There were protests and some of them were pretty violent. Maggie said that there was no way that she would back down from the policy. Meanwhile, Tory MPs were hearing the upset from ordinary voters in their constituencies.

1/ Hard-right Brextremist liar @michaelgove has claimed that the UK has "the most liberal attitude to migration of an European country" on the radio today.

It's such an extraordinary lie.

Take refugees - per capita we take far fewer than loads of other European nations.
2/ Take bureaucracy. British immigration fees are amongst the highest in the world, let alone Europe.

Then the British government stands accused of rejecting applications on trivialities in order to rake in even more fees for the re-applications.
