Let's game this out a bit. (thread). House impeaches. The goal is to score some GOP defections. Senate won't convict, but there are some GOP defections (has to be with 22 GOP Senate seats up in 2020) 1/
Trump thinks he has a year to recover and crow about "exoneration" before 2020. But the other investigations continue, more bad news for him comes out, Mueller's 14 "farmed out" cases get sunlight, NY AG makes her move, and we get that drip drip drip into 2020 - 2/
Only now you have these GOP House and Senate members tied to their "protect the criminal at all costs" votes hanging around their necks during their campaigns as the drip drip drip continues w/ unsealed indictments etc. 3/
This means the pressure is off in terms thinking we need to stall on impeachment inquiry as it can begin now and will boost all that comes later w/ other congressional oversight investigations & hearings, NY AG & the mysterious 14 Mueller farmed out. Best of both/all worlds 4/4

“Importantly, it’s clear that if this is what Trump and his team of thugs could do to me — have me hacked, launder the info, and then try to use it against me without having their paw prints on it – they certainly are capable of doing it to Hillary, the DNC and others.”

George Conway stayed obscure for decades then stepped into the limelight as "NeverTrump" weeks b4 Kennedy announcement. He got NeverTrump support for Kavanaugh. His movements were very deliberate. He asked to be invited to (then secret) NeverTrump meetings in DC. I was there 2/2
@jaketapper the Conways con is not out of loyalty to Trump. It's about the long game -- SCOTUS, federal judges, and the agenda of the Federalist Society and the Council for National Policy (CNP). Also their own survival post Trump and what is sure to be a CNN contract for her😉

Thread: @arimelber asked me last night whether #TrumpShutDown was at all related to the pressure brought to bear by the #MuellerProbe. Let’s consider this more closely. It’s a distraction & attempt to show strength at a time that #Trump has been weakened.
First, #MuellerProbe will continue full steam ahead. It is funded and not impacted by #TrumpShutDown. The shutdown isn’t wise or good for anyone. So a shutdown only serves to help Trump if it makes him look strong and like a “winner” to his base. Wrong-headed But Trumpian logic.
Things to remember as we wake up to a partial #GovernmentShutdown: You will still get Medicare, Medicaid, SSI services. Dept of State, DOJ, DOT r among the agencies that will have to shut some activities. Homeland security won’t stop border enforcement, courts will operate.

The Uphill Battle to Take the #Senate
We have a chance for Democrats to gain the #SenateMajority after the Nov elections. The balance is currently 51/49 (including 2 Indep’s.). We need turnover at least 2 GOP seats, w/o any losses. With losses, we will need to win more.
Senators serve for six years, divided into three ‘classes’. One-third of Senate seats are in play every two years, plus any vacancies for early resignations. This year there are two of the latter.
Unfortunately, in 2018, we have an uphill battle. There are 35 races, but 26 are for Democratic seats, and only 9 are GOP. And most of the latter are considered ‘safe’ for the incumbents. So, taking the Senate in 2018 is a daunting task.
