Time for a Brexit break as the shouting gets louder, & we replay the past.

To counter the negativity of our political era, I was thinking about a fierce blue sky, magical cloud formations, extraordinary achievements of humanity & of the beauty of a quiet moment.

For now, Adiós.
This time, I hope, for real!

Have taken Twitter off my phone for a while - to get away from the noise and to stop being part of the noise. I think a period of quiet from everyone, and some thinking & reflection, is a good way forward.

For now, be kind.

Day 1 #GeziPark #Kavala trial saw a packed courtroom in Istanbul & a high number of international observers.

Of poignant note was the Greek delegation of lawyers from Kavala, Greece.

Tomorrow expected to be a full day.

Worth noting a crowded courtroom rose to give both Kavala & Aksakoğlu a long, hearty and respectful applause, many times over. #GeziPark

The Court heard from 4 other Defendants, & lawyers’ statements for Kavala & Aksakoğlu. Court refused to allow public back for interim decision. A few international observers eventually permitted to stay, including @BarHumanRights.

A big night here in Istanbul as @ekrem_imamoglu upsets the apple cart in #Istanbulelections. There’s been back slapping & congratulatory hugging, car honking & flag waving on my drive across the Bosphorous tonight, but seems quieter than maybe expected. What happens next? #turkey

1/9: The debate on #Brexit isn’t moving forward. At best it’s going round in circles. Or regressing to the pre Chequers era. The public positions of both Johnson & Hunt on renegotiation by October are unrealistic & they must know it. A thread of thoughts on this.
2/9: Conventional wisdom now says no deal is growing more likely. I disagree. We’ve had a good look at no deal and decided not to go there. It’s a wasting political bogeyman... unless Parliament screws up badly, which it may, or the EU force the issue, which I still doubt.
3/9: Johnson will try smoke & mirrors on the backstop & tweaks on the future relationship to squeak a revised deal through in October. He has a chance, but I doubt it will work. If it doesn’t, another A50 extension is likely, linked to either an election or 2nd referendum.

1. Now y'all know I have a problem with the leadership of the #Brexit movement. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, they lie constantly and they never know what they're talking about. From WTO rules to EU border controls, they haven't a clue between them.
2. When confronted on TV they offer up empty mantras about believing in Britain or postulate that german car makers will come racing to the rescue. Always with the view that it will be alright on the night. Never any credible answers.
3. They also have some pretty daft ideas. Especially, but not exclusively, the lexiters. They seem to think that a split from the EU gives them carte blanche to do as they please without any reference to the international ramifications.

As a "contemptuous Remainer", may I assure you that I have considered the implications of "winning", as you put it, very carefully.
First, Remainers long ago gave up the idea of #Brexit being a winner/loser situation. They are all too fully aware that leaving/2
2/ will be nothing but lose/lose all round. Oh, except maybe for those who are trying to avoid the new tax legislation.
Second, the 48% who voted #Remain, and the @the3million and @BritishInEurope who were disenfranchised in the 2016 referendum /3
3/know only too well what it's like to have their vote ignored and their postal votes "lost" or maybe never counted. The BBC & other *impartial* media outlets name them persistently as #Remoaners, if mentioned at all. The PM referred to them as "losers" in the Withdrawal Bill. /4

This seems nuts, I know, but imagine a world where we are right, deep in the endzone and it is clear that this is what gets the Withdrawal Agreement over the line.

By this point, the British parliament will have demonstrated it has no appetite or majority to crash out /2
And that would clearly be the heavy price of walking away from the backstop - which anyway cuts the old Dec 2020 'cliff-edge' pretty much in half.

Have look at the positive spin of the backstop from this weeks DUP reassurance paper. /3

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
And now that I'm not desperately trying to keep up with livetweeting it, I shall turn my mess of self-retweets into a proper thread. #Brexit #BrexitDK
