There is no evidence presented in this article that Trump was aware of this and Trump denies that he was aware as well. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t aware — but at the moment there is exactly zero evidence that he was. Something worth keeping in mind as you formulate your hot takes.

As a side note, if this happened (a big if!), IMHO the “well even if Trump didn’t know about this it’s still his fault because his underlings felt compelled to do it” excuse doesn’t work here. An (allegedly!) garbage boss doesn’t give you free rein to preemptively do stupid shit.
Let me just reiterate — the original WSJ story (before conflicting info came in disputing some of its allegations) did *not* claim Trump was involved. So people not only immediately believed the story with no skepticism but also made hot take leaps beyond what the piece claimed.
