Roughly a year ago, I was coming back from paternity leave when we learned, as a country, that our government was systematically ripping children from their parents at the border. My @MoveOn colleagues and I—with an army of allies—threw ourselves into organizing to stop it. 1/
We organized day and night, through tears. The NYT wrote of the Families Belong Together protests, “The marches taking place across the country this weekend are really about the soul of America.”

The battle is still for the soul of America. And we now know, clearly, bitterly, that this administration never rethought its atrocities. Never seriously considered treating refugees and immigrants as human beings. Demanded its appointees push ever further.
The battle is still for the soul of America. There are the day to day battles over criminal policies and in-real-time human rights violations. And then there’s the broader battle to end the Trump administration. And we have to do both.
I’m writing this from the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee, where voting begins in about 6 hours to elect the next leadership team of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. I’m on the ballot for chair. And I am falling asleep with a hope:
My hope is that, 10 hours from now when voting closes, I’ll be in a position to organize, to lift up voices and organizers all across this state, to build a party that builds Wisconsin into a state that treats every person as a human being.
My hope is that, together, we’ll build this party so strong that Trump’s re-election campaign will slam into Wisconsin like we’re a brick wall.
My hope is that we’ll be a part of building a country where we are marching not to protest unspeakable wrongs—but to win victories that affirm our common humanity and shared planet.
