so disingenuous & evil. “sexism is explicitly the discrimination based on someone’s sex” how can u disagree with that? it’s a legitimate fact.
it’s true that women are oppressed on more axes than simply sex but why does that require removing bio sex as a protected characteristic?
they’re drawing a false parallel & arguing against something no one is claiming. they say “sexism” then switch to “misogyny”.
women DO experience oppression in different ways, which intersect w race, class, disability, sexuality etc. doesn’t mean we don’t ALSO experience sexism.
is race a protected class? yes.
is sexual orientation? yes.
is disability? yes.
“gender identity”? not explicitly, no, but whats an example of oppression/discrimination on the basis of gender ID? people can dress, express themselves, & personally identify however they please.
that doesn’t mean that gender nonconforming and transgender identified people won’t/don’t face hardship for it. but the hardship faced isn’t so significant that it justifies valuing the inclusion of gender ID as a protected class over sex as a protected class. SEXISM IS REAL!!!!
why can we not legally protect people from being discriminated against on the basis of gender identity while still maintaining sex as a protected class? what is the threat that trans/GNC people face from sex being a protected class that is so significant it requires removing sex?
the truth is that there isn’t one. no trans person suffers from material, tangible discrimination or oppression as a result of sex being a protected class. the only thing they cannot do is claim to be oppressed on the basis of the sex that they are not, but desire to be.
TW are bitter about this. they want to be women & insist they are, & as such feel personally offended & upset that they are not oppressed on the basis of sex as women are. they want to redefine the discrimination they face for being GNC to be bc theyre women. that’s not the case.
what do TW “lose” if we keep sex as a protected characteristic & add gender identity as a separate protected characteristic? if no one could legally discriminate against trans ppl on the basis of their gender ID, but also could not discriminate against women on the basis of sex?
well first we have to answer what is “discrimination”- therein lies the truth. what does it mean if someone cant discriminate due to ur gender ID? u cannot be denied employment, housing, healthcare, goods or services on the basis of your gender ID.
but that’s not enough for them.
they don’t simply want to be protected against discrimination in those ways. they consider not having unquestioned, free and open access to female-only spaces to be discrimination, specifically the discrimination that they believe they face on the basis of their gender identity.
to them, women aren’t oppressed on the basis of sex. because to them, oppression and discrimination is any situation where someone does not uncritically believe and accept that they (people born male) can be/are in fact actually women, and people do believe “cis” women are women.
refusing to accept & validate the delusions of someone who believes that “woman” is a feeling (and therefore they, a male, can feel like and by extension BE a woman) as indisputable fact, is not discrimination or oppression. it is not something that can or should be made illegal.
if gender ID was a protected class IN ADDITION to sex, those ppl who did not validate, believe or affirm that trans people ARE the sex of the gender they want to be, would not be allowed to refuse services, employment, healthcare or housing to trans ppl on the basis of their ID.
but that isn’t enough for transwomen. they don’t want fair treatment; they don’t want to be treated equally (legally) to any other person who may be the target of discrimination. they want it to be illegal to question that they are women. to be illegal to define women by our sex.
by convincing the public that biological sex is socially constructed, that sex is a spectrum, and that male ≠ man and female ≠ woman, they erase the language we have to talk about our unique experiences as people of the female sex, and how our sex is the root of our oppression.
if sex is not protected, “woman” has no legal definition & there is nothing that we can do to keep men out of women’s spaces. if a woman is anyone who says they are, & ppl of female sex aren’t granted safe spaces away from males, theres nowhere women can go to get away from men.
