Total Tucker Torpedos spotted so far today: 5, more than 10% of the entire production run
Correction: 6, plus a prototype chassis #BBRTA2019
Prototype Tucker chassis with transverse mounted flat 6 helicopter engine & hydraulic actuated valve system
In case you were wondering, the AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) museum in Hershey PA, Chocolate City USA. And those Tuckers run.
Blair rifling around Preston Tucker’s desk, plus some bitchin’ Tucker ephemera (including the original concept drawing)
Also on display: plenty of kickass Studebakers, the humble little farm wagon company in South Bend IN that made some of the most beautiful cars in history
Currently in Akron OH shopping for used blimps
Galley Boy sammich + Ohio cherry shake at Swenson’s is *****chef’s kiss*****. The Akron original that made LeBron everything he is today
Out of 50 Tuckers ever made, I have now seen the following serial numbers:
0000 (‘Tin Goose’ prototype)
1001
1008
1013
1014
1016
1022
1024
1026
1027
1030
1032
1039
1044
1048 (rode in this one)
1050
Forget the Avanti, this is the coolest Studebaker of all time: the 1962 Sceptre concept car designed by Brooks Stevens
1001-1036 were constructed at the Tucker plant in Chicago before bankruptcy; 1037-1050 were assembled by Preston Tucker & a skeleton crew afterwards. There were 8 more chassis and spare parts left over, and 2-3 were made into cars much later, but not considered production cars
Preston Tucker raised about $2 million from investors for his ill fated car venture in 1947-8. That’s roughly what it would take to buy an original Tucker car today
