A major reason for Iran’s recent escalation is our lack of support for Saudis in Yemen.

They look over and see how adverse we are to even helping our allies do fighting against a threat on their southern border.

They know we’re weak and contemptible allies.
A real “America First” foreign policy would take into account Americans’ weariness for more Middle Eastern wars. It would also recognize that US has strategic interests in the region. The best solution, then, is to empower our allies—who have more of a stake, as they live there.
You’re agnostic about Iran controlling the flow of oil through Hormuz and around Aden? Sorry, you’re not a serious person. It’s easy to play make believe.

Given that we have an interest in maintaining free transit, what is it that we’re prepared to do about it?
Turns out, we have allies fighting there who have a far greater stake in the outcome. Wow, that’s real convenient!

Instead of supporting them in neutralizing the threat (and yes, don’t be silly, it’s an Iranian threat) we decide to kneecap them.
The GOP base is confused, without leadership, and on foreign policy questions, is sliding into craziness.

It’s important to reject the old interventionism, and the dummies like @LindseyGrahamSC and McCain who only wanted to fight so long as it wasn’t in America’s interest.
