Society’s one dimensional framing of “timing” as motive demonstrates our bias. Sure, publicity or politics is possible, but it’s equally likely that seeing your rapist on TV every day might push you to speak up. So might knowing they’re in a position of power, or are about to be.
As to her book promotion, the implication is that financial gain from telling her story is sufficient motivation to lie, but at what net cost? Is it more likely that the longest running columnist in America would risk personal ruin for book sales, or that she’s telling the truth?
And not for nothing, our underlying tendency to frame any profit sought or gained by a woman - even for her labor - as somehow nefarious, ill gotten, or uncouth, adds a particularly sour taste to credibility arguments based on publicity or reward.
