Reading old military engineering treatises on how to sap, the principles of sapping, and the roles of sappers becomes all the more interesting when you realize that "s" used to be printed as "f"

The more I read about the American Revolution, the more I'm impressed by British general Sir Guy Carleton. He strikes me as one of the most reliable yet underrated individuals of the war

The dude defends Quebec City with a scrappy little force of foot, Royal Marines, sailors, & militia, helped in part because he helped take the place back in the F&I War. Knew where every colonial battery would be posted because he set up Wolfe's artillery back then
And by the way, he's responsible for the Quebec Act, which was one of the causes of the war - an act remarkably well-thought out at winning over the residents of Quebec to the side of the British crown. Very able administrator and a decent field general

What Jane says -- the greatest threat is that armored vehicles break down somewhere that they can't be easily recovered and some miserable E6 has to find a way to haul them onto a flatbed
And let's stop pretending that we've never done this before. Military units and equipment have been a staple in holiday parades across the country since before the founding. Usually NG and Reserve units local to the area, honor guards & bands in cities near a base.
The optics on this are different given the circumstances and the administration, yes, but this is not Tiananman Square for the love of God. Those crew members are probably not overly pleased to be there, but they are proud to be able to represent the US Army to the nation

At around 7:30 AM, July 1, 1863, a small patrol of the 8th IL Cav led by Lieutenant Marcellus Jones spots the glint of morning light off burnished barrels of rifled muskets. It is as they had expected - Heth's division is marching on Gettysburg. Jones levels his carbine and fires
The first shot echoes through the still, humid July morning air, the smoke drifting down the slope over the Chambersburg Pike. Fields rich with crops lie gleaming in the sun; light glinting off bedewed spider webs. More carbines pop & crackle, the pickets now adding their fire.
A scant 2700 blue-coated and dusty horsemen are arrayed on ridgelines to the west of the town, dismounted, so as to force their enemies to deploy in line to fight them back. One in every four men holds the reins of their steeds, taking more carbines out of the fight.

2/ It's a nontrivial matter. There's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip for Joe, and his oppo book is about three miles thick, but he's a known quantity, he loves the media and the media loves him, and he's lost every goddamn thing in the world that matters and keeps going.
3/ No, mouthbreathers, I'm not endorsing Biden. I'm observing that he's got challenges and assets the rest of the field lacks. He's old, but so is Trump. He both has a certain character and *is* a certain character. He makes the race more interesting, win or lose.

2/36 As I went by 61st & Park on Friday the 13th I saw Paparazzi on the corner. It’s not unusual in NYC & if they’re just hanging out they’re usually waiting for someone to arrive/leave. That was how they looked & since it's the Regency Hotel I figured they were waiting on Cohen
3/36 At this point I was convinced the Trump Tower Fire on Saturday was a factor in Cohen’s FBI Raid the prior Monday, so Cohen was on my mind & I was paying attention but I didn’t expect to walk by the Papparazzi & straight into Cohen standing on the street chatting w/ someone.
