This extract perfectly describes the people with whom I repeatedly clash on Twitter, who dismiss or deny the horrendous atrocities perpetrated by Bashar al-Assad in #Syria (from allianceofmesocialists.org/review-of-rohi…)
And this rings true, to me, as well:
These extracts come from Frieda Afary’s review of Rohini Hensman’s Indefensible: A Challenge to Pseudo-Anti-Imperialism. Review was published by the Alliance of Middle Eastern and North African Socialists: allianceofmesocialists.org/review-of-rohi…
I know that, in reproducing them, I will be attacked by a vast swarm of Russian bots, conspiracy theorists, outright fascists, leftist tankies and other apologists for mass murder. But that’s OK. Troll away, people – it bounces off.
The US, UK and other Western nations have engaged in endless imperial/neo-imperial wars and proxy wars. But they are not the only powers to do so. Those of us who who oppose imperialism in all its forms have a duty to speak out, and to weather the shitstorms that come our way.
When the “anti-imperialist” left excuses the imperialism of non-Western countries, we become utterly lost, falling into the same moral morass as the Western imperialists we oppose. Those of us who resist this tendency must struggle against it again and again.
We, opponents of all imperialism, find ourselves in the same position as the anti-Stalinist left was, in the mid-20th Century. We are repeatedly attacked from both left and right. But we will stand up for humanity.
True humanitarians oppose all imperialism, regardless of its perpetrator, and speak out against all atrocities, whoever commits them.
