The bad faith of the insinuation that McConnell cannot honestly or morally oppose a very bad policy idea today because of something his "ancestors" did is breathtaking.
But this, again, is a key left-wing strategy and a huge factor in the push for reparations. They need Americans to feel perpetually guilty, to think of themselves as criminals, so they will accept the constant expansion of government power.
A major goal of the reparations movement is to enshrine the idea that modern Americans are "guilty" of crimes that happened two centuries ago. It would chisel the left-wing idea of collective perpetual guilt into stone.
It's a disenfranchisement strategy. The Left is HUGE on disenfranchisement, using every method from bringing tidal waves of migrants across the border and sabotaging the U.S. Census to the reparations argument that white Americans should have no say in the matter.
From every angle possible, the totalitarian Left wishes to hammer the message that a growing number of issues are no longer subject to votes or even discussion. One strategy is to loudly argue that huge numbers of Americans have no moral standing to oppose certain policies.
The Left does this all the time with immigration: only racist xenophobes want border security and citizenship laws enforced. Reparations are another club to beat Americans with. If you benefit from "white privilege," especially if your ancestors owned slaves, you need to shut up.
This attitude is intensely divisive. Many Americans will deeply resent the demand that they must meekly submit to a reparations shakedown. Many other Americans will deeply resent them for objecting because they believe all dissent is rooted in selfishness and racism.
Reparations are absurd as a policy proposal, but Democrats know that. They don't want the policy. They want the fight - the divisiveness, the heightened animosity from which they can harvest political power, the message that American citizens deserve to be treated like criminals.
