This lunchtime is the @HealthSciYork talk by Dr Peter Knapp - lead of the @TRECAStudy - all about how we can understand why people do or don’t take part in research #KnappIsAHero
He’s done 20 years of research in this area, making patient information better and more meaningful #KnappIsAHero
We know that people getting into trials is challenging and we may have a whole bunch of assumptions about why and what is happening ... and these assumptions about information needs and acceptability my even extend to NHS REC @HRA_Latest committees
The group undertook an overview review to map the evidence on trial participation and explore why different reviews may come to different conclusions #KnappIsAHero
There are a handy set of things to think about in the list here .. as #KnappIsAHero we’re going to let him off the slide ...
This overview focussed on the psycho social determinants of trial entry from the participants directly, not the thoughts of health care teams about why people do/don’t
The review looked to map the stated decisions on the COM-B model; capability opportunity and motivation leading to behaviour. It’s not generating new themes but looking how to understand the (original) SR findings
There is a trouble here though ... if you are pulling multiple SR you may be pulling multiple times the primary studies have been included ... leading to double counting. There’s a tool to check how much this happens which says in this case it’s ok. #KnappIsAHero
The key facilitators for research entry are in five main chunks - personal benefit, altruism, financial benefit, confidence in the physician and low burden of research
There is a little bit of context here - very sick probably less talk about altruism - but mostly flow across all
There were more barriers, and these may be more specifically about the type of research (trials, drug studies etc)
There’s also a little bit of stuff which can swing either way
There are a bunch of studies - and a bunch of gaps - that have tried to address the identified themes
There are a load of opportunities to look further at how to improve recruiting and newer ways of addressing them can be developed #KnappIsAHero
Frankly this is all excellent and really makes it clear that #KnappIsAHero
