Well, I read the SPM & listened to the press conference, & I am not sure that was the key or dominant message... Click bait?

Though, a couple of journalists asked the IPCC leadership if they ate meat.

I am not sure how this headline would go down to the average reader (most will not read the article)? The UN is telling me I can't eat meat now? Not sure this is so productive, or even accurate.

The message on meat was quite nuanced...

Can the Paris Agreement be strengthened by a treaty limiting fossil fuel supply?

If you could get through the politics to make supply side policies happen, you would probably not need supply side policies (as the problem would be solved)...

There is plenty to digest over the coming days, weeks, months, years, but a few initial reactions from the SPM...

Just to set the scene, no pressure: "Land provides the principal basis for human livelihoods and well-being including the supply of food, freshwater and multiple other ecosystem services, as well as biodiversity." Land is already heavily impacted...

Agriculture, Forestry, & Other Land Uses (AFOLU) are a quarter of global GHG emissions (GWP100).

The natural response of land to human-induced environmental change has been to cause a sink of ~11.2GtCO₂/yr, 29% of global CO₂. This may not last with climate change.

How much CO₂ can be emitted for 1.5°C?

These scenarios are based on MAGICC, with a fixed TCRE, so the only variation is emission pathway.

The CO₂ that can be emitted depends heavily on non-CO₂, how 1.5°C is defined, & carbon budget definition.

If a politician asks me what is the carbon budget, what do I say as an honest scientist?

Could it be that the carbon budget concept is useful, but not the actual (uncertain) carbon budget?

So much is vested in the budget concept that it will not go away. But, what is it about the budget concept which is useful? Concept or number?
