After the approved rally in Victoria Park finished groups of #HongKong pro-democracy activists discuss where to go next, some towards Causeway Bay. Many police in North Point where people from the mainland’s Fujian Province have threatened retaliation if protestors come there
People in #HongKong’s Causeway Bay watching street clashes live on the Kowloon side of the Harbour in Sham Shui Po. #China
Now blocking the street in Causeway Bay shopping district. They’re safe here for a few hours because police will not want to tear gas tourists etc. #HongKong #China
The new pro-democracy activist strategy in #HongKong: smaller groups in quick hit guerilla disruption. This group heading for pro-Beijing stronghold of North Point. #China
#HongKong Wanchai stand-off protestors and police right now. #China
Earlier we arrived at Wanchai Subway. We came up on the escalators & arrived one floor below the entrance. Tear gas had drifted in. Passengers without masks struggled in discomfort to get away from it. Local protestors helped them to find an exit. One reporter rushed a baby away.
Just passed this blood on the street in #HongKong’s Causeway Bay. Some protestor has copped it pretty hard when the riot police raced through. #China
Shocking footage of #HongKong riot police charging into a subway station pursuing pro-democracy activists and firing into them at point blank range. I’ve seen police being provoked here but I’m speechless. Carrie Lam says no police inquiry needed they’re investigating themselves.
I’m sure it’s obvious to most but I should point out that what’s being fired is not a normal gun but rubber bullets or something along those lines. However many in #HongKong are questioning the need to fire in this way at the top of an escalator as protestors are trying to leave.
You’ll notice that a sudden rush of “pro-Beijing” / anti-#HongKong protestor comments regarding the crisis here are from new Twitter accounts with randomly generated number handles. There’s been a significant troll campaign...
Another major development from the weekend in #HongKong was a new police tactic: undercover officers dress as protestors then, when the riot squad races in & activists start running, they grab demonstrators near them, throw them to the ground and pin them till other police come.
