Monoculture is ruining agriculture. Our ancestors were not so dumb: combining rice with fish farming in China increases rice yields by 20% on average, and provides farmers with free fish proteins, valuable market produce.
Rice-duck farming show similar yields, on average 20% more rice, and a 50% more total outtake if the savings on pesticides and fertilizer is counted into the mix. This is real green, not greenwashing. The ducks grown are also more practical to sell for city markets.
Besides, nobody likes weeding and everyone likes ducks right? Comparison between rice paddies using ducks versus those poor duck free paddies.
Unintended side effect: areas that had extensive fish-rice or duck-rice farming saw an increase in tourism of 300% compared to areas with extensive mono crop rice farming. Everyone loves fish and birds.
An example of beneficial agriculture in Europe is the humble hedgerow: definite numbers are not in yet, but it seems that they are the best way to keep pest-eating wild insects around, and wild bees that are even better than managed bees at pollinating orchards.
One of the best books written on agriculture and ecology is The Running Hare by @JLewisStempel. One year in the life of one man's mission to return life to one field in England.
